Butte Talks Halted on Anaconda Offer Strike Endorsed Vote Planned

Negotiations between Anaconda Copper and the Joint Negotiating Committee of Mine Mill were paused with no resumption date. The company and union leaders issued statements and letters urging back to work and continuous talks to settle the long running strike affecting Butte and other western communities.

Mediators at Kennecott Tackle Local Problems

Federal mediators sought to bridge gaps between Kennecott Copper Corp and 26 local unions on strike. Meetings involved Utah locals of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, with efforts to arrange further sessions with clerical workers and machinists.

Nine Mine Mill officials guilty of conspiracy

Nine present and former Mine Mill officials were convicted of conspiring to defraud the government. The defendants face up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. sentencing is postponed. The verdict followed about 14 hours of jury deliberation.

Airman Killed in Auto Crash East of Glasgow

A 19 year old Arkansas airman Jerry C. Davis stationed at Glasgow Air Force Base died when his car hit a timber bridge on U S Highway 2 near Frazer about 35 miles east of Glasgow. Davis was alone, thrown clear, and found by a passerby in the highway. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Curtis E Davis of Wynne Arkansas and had been at Glasgow since January. The Montana 1959 traffic toll rose to 225, fifth highest yearly total.

State to Share In NP Spending

Northern Pacific Railway will spend 38 million dollars for improvements and new equipment in 1960. About 1% million is earmarked for work in southern Montana. A 90 mile centralized traffic control line between Livingston and Laurel is expected to cost about 14 million dollars. The Billings depot will be remodeled but no cost given. The plan is about 13 million more than 1959 with just over 20 million dollars for new freight cars.

Cuban policewoman wounded by accidental shooting

From a Havana hospital bed policewoman Olga Diaz Guerra, 28, told superiors her bullet wound came as she reached for a compact in her purse. She said a small automatic discharged, striking her in the chest.

President Eisenhower was greeted by about 200,000 Tunisians during a short stop in La Marsa as he pressed on to the Western summit in Paris. He met with Habib Bourguiba to discuss the Algerian war and de Gaulle’s offer, and then prepared for the Paris talks aboard the USS Des Moines. He remained bothered by bronchitis but appeared in good spirits.
