Pioneer 6 Goes Into Solar Orbit From Cape Kennedy
NASA reports Pioneer 6, a drum shaped interplanetary explorer, launched atop a Delta rocket from Cape Kennedy. The craft sped 4,900 miles to a target 345 miles above Africa, entering an elliptical solar orbit and transmitting high quality data as it heads toward Venus and Earth paths. This first of four Pioneer spacecraft will launch every six months to study interplanetary space.
