Allies launch massive bombardment and landings at Arawe
Allied forces poured 315 tons of shells on positions and used a costly diversionary raid before a main assault ashore. Troops and amphibious tanks moved through coconut palm ridges at Amalut plantation on the Amalut peninsula, a boot shaped extension near New Britain. The main landing occurred 50 miles southeast of Cape Gloucester and 82 miles west of Gasmata, a base bombed the prior day with 248 tons of bombs. The Arawe area saw 356 tons of explosives and 174000 rounds of ammunition active in the biggest aerial operation of the southwest Pacific war.
