London AP reports an Addis Ababa massacre as Crown Prince Asfa Wassan is named king replacing Emperor Haile Selassie. Civilians were killed and many wounded after gunfire by a band of attackers during peaceful demonstrations.
In Berkeley and Butte Montana a union switch dispute between Mine Mill and Smelter Workers and the Brotherhoods reached the U S Court of Appeals. Lower court injunctions limited the Brotherhoods from striking during the contested transfer of switching work. The case centers on whether switching should remain with the union which had assumed control in 1958.
In Stockholm Sweden the AP reports Sweden exports stainless steel cow teeth to South America to replace worn natural teeth from grazing on pampas grass. The invention aims to improve cattle digestion and nutrition by providing durable replacements.
Three children and a woman were stabbed to death in Detroit. Police sought Delores Martin 26 mother of one victim after Daran 3 was found in a cedar chest. A note to her common law husband described deep distress and intent involving Virginia 24 and her family.
President-elect Kennedy selected Minnesota Governor Orville Freeman for secretary of agriculture and AFL-CIO lawyer Arthur J. Goldberg for secretary of labor. He also named Rep. George McGovern to direct the food for peace program, while Rep. William L. Dawson declined postmaster general. Freeman, 42, a WWII veteran and former attorney, spoke of tackling agricultural surplus and world hunger with a coordinated policy.
The Atlas-Able moon rocket exploded in flight over the Atlantic off Cape Canaveral, ending a $40 million effort to launch a lunar environmental probe. This failure marks the sixth American attempt to orbit a satellite around the moon, widening the gap with the Soviet Union which had already achieved lunar and orbital feats.
The U N political committee backed a referendum for Algeria to decide its future with United Nations organization and supervision. The vote 47 20 with 28 abstentions narrowly cleared the two-thirds threshold but faces likely rejection by France which boycotted the debate. The United States opposed the plan citing risks of extremism while De Gaulle pressed his plan for a January referendum across France and Algeria.
An $8 million B52D jet bomber crippled in an aerial refueling accident exploded and burned after an emergency landing at Larson Air Force Base in Moses Lake Washington. Ten crewmen escaped with one man injured as the bomber’s left wing collapsed after being punctured by a tanker boom.
More than 100 bills are prepared in proper form for introduction when Montana's 1959 Legislature convenes January 2. The Legislative Council and other agencies produced most, with projected state savings and grazing fee reform among the key revenue measures.
