Soviet and German reports describe major moves on the Dnieper as Cherkasy and Kremenchug bridgeheads join to clear a 65 mile stretch. Moscow says the right bank from Kremenchug to Cherkasy is cleared.
Butte city council, adopting a joint tax and license report, votes to remove all signs with unpaid encroachment taxes within 10 days. Notices will be mailed to owners. delinquents to be listed monthly. Mayor Barry O Leary vetoed attending the Chicago Mayors conference.
In Dallas on December 15 a fire destroyed the incendiary bomb casing plant of the Austin Bridge company. Magnesium stocks valued at several million dollars were burned, producing dazzling white flames visible up to 140 miles away. No injuries were reported.
Butte expects partly cloudy conditions with a day Thursday and a slight rise in temperatures. Wednesday’s high around 34 and a low near minus 4. West of the continental divide clouds and valley flurries or freezing drizzle possible. higher terrain should see increasing cloudiness. American task force led by Captain John H. Cassady steamed toward Truk to bait a battle but Japanese forces stayed hidden behind harbor nets. The operation also blasted Rabaul and other bases, shot down 25 to 23 planes, and damaged ships during 30 days of raids in the south Pacific.
Chinese troops supported by U S air forces pushed into the suburbs of three major Japanese held towns in central China. The high command said advances reached Lishien on the Changteh Yangtze road and the Tungting lakeside towns Ansiang and Manhsien as Japanese remnants were squeezed near Linli and Itu.
London reports say the Bulgarian army supports demands in Sofia for a new regency and a new government. Col Damian Veltchev is cited as a likely successor to Premier Bokilov if reorganization occurs. Bokilov aims to revamp his cabinet within 10 days amid army dissatisfaction.
Montana will host FDA distribution offices at Billings and Great Falls in addition to Helena headquarters. Western regional director Buell F. Maben announced the plan, with William Allan named Montana supervisor to decentralize FDA activities in the state.

They seek 30 percent raises and oppose the four cent per hour increase from the little steel formula. Non operating unions await congressional action on an eight cent raise.
The War department announced that 2nd Lt. Kenneth B. Rongstad of Kalispell was killed in action in the European area on Wednesday. He was the son of Mrs. Grace M. Mongers of 620 Second Avenue Kalispell.
Allied HQ reports Indian and Canadian forces of the Eighth Army widened a Moro river bridgehead to five miles, with Caldari village captured near Ortona. Canadians conducted a night raid on Berrati, taking nearly 150 German prisoners and seizing equipment, while a Nazi prisoner praised Texans fighting nearby.
Fire caused an estimated 7500 damage to two business establishments in the Williams building in Chinook. Firemen suspect defective wiring started the blaze.
The Office of Price Administration announced a nationwide crackdown on gasoline theft and counterfeit coupons. Distributors must screen out irregular coupons and fill stations must cover losses from invalid coupons. Civil or criminal action may follow for continued acceptance. Meetings will outline the plan to distributors nationwide.
American heavy and medium bombers attacked Arawe New Britain on Tuesday dropping 356 tons of hazardous materials, the heaviest load in a single mission by SW Pacific Air forces. Over 100 aircraft took part plus incident planes, targeting the Japanese base between Cape Gloucester and Gasmata. No planes were lost.

The Commerce department said about two thirds of the roughly 7.7 billion dollars in new 1943 construction supported war needs. Army and Navy work totaled 2.7 billion, with 2.2 billion in related industrial construction, but overall activity was 43 percent below 1942’s peak. Private residential building fell from 1.5 billion to 800 million, highway work sank to about 400 million, and public utilities declined from 700 million to 500 million.
