A New York Times overview explains insomnia affects about 25 million Americans, with over $100 million yearly spent on sleep pills. It notes many prescriptions are ineffective or harmful, and withdrawal from drugs can improve sleep by about 20 percent.
President-elect Carter announced two more Cabinet picks, naming W Michael Blumenthal for Treasury and Rep Brock Adams for Transportation. He plans to reveal an economic program to create jobs and possibly cut taxes after Christmas and said Senate veto is not required for his choices.
A delegation of big city mayors pressed for a $12.3 billion job program and $7.7 billion in tax rebates. Carter named Blumenthal and Adams to positions, with Pfeiffer declining consideration for commerce secretary. He expects more appointments after Christmas and outlines cautious deficit management and four year planning.
Psychologists Kenneth Wessel and John Trybula mailed 470 Christmas cards to strangers in Chicago and suburbs. Over 12 percent replied by card or phone and handwritten messages yielded more responses than signatures.
More than 110 Butte taxpayers protested increased tax statements and most adjustments corrected duplicates or errors. Examples include Nathan May on land taxes, Nap Montoya and Raymond Lawrence from local addresses, and Anaconda Co. property with decimal or sprinkling miscalculations. Delays due to 1974 valuations shifted notices but city projects net relief. delinquency rates and penalties apply if taxes remain unpaid.
Montana State University asked the state Board of Regents for authority to spend 340000 to build stables for 26 horses and two caretaker apartments on campus. The proposal, financed with restricted funds, was tabled 3-2 amid concerns about cost and public confusion, pending legislative and MSU approval.
