Coroner Andy Aleksich approved a large flasher warning light installed near the scene of Silver Bow County’s latest road fatality. The site lies about 12.5 miles west of Butte where a young man died in a one car crash on December 4.
A ruptured Baldwin Hills reservoir unleashed a 100 foot mud and water wall that wrecked hundreds of homes in a Los Angeles area between downtown and the airport. Police estimated 6 dead unofficially as thousands fled and rescue efforts began.
Silver County Coroner Andy Aleksich launched a drive for improved highway safety markings after a fatal crash on US 10 near Butte. He urged luminous detour lighting larger signs and earlier warning distances plus seat belt use to cut deaths and injuries on current and future projects.
An Intermountain Transportation Co. bus and a car sideswiped on U.S. Highway 10A nine miles west of Anaconda Saturday night. No injuries were reported. The bus carried seven passengers and was driven by Kenneth Paige of Kalispell. The car driver was Lyle C. Hinman of Anaconda. The bus resumed on its way to Missoula and Kalispell.
The Montana State Council of Electrical Workers held a two day convention at the Finlen Hotel with over 100 attendees. Immediate past president Jack Haley of Billings led the business sessions. Glen Evangelisti of Billings was elected president Leroy Halpine of Helena first vice president Tom Larson of Miles City second vice president and A G Bolenske of Billings as secretary-treasurer.
Glade Young 28 died in a Missoula hospital from brain damage and injuries after his pickup was struck by a westbound Northern Pacific freight train near the crossing at 2 am. The truck was dragged about 70 feet and Young was flung 48 feet from the vehicle. He recently moved from Magna Utah and worked at Missoula Livestock Auction Co. yard nearby.
Silver Bow County records show 15 large taxpayers responsible for about 48.1 percent of the $5.14 million property tax take for 1963. Anaconda Co. leads with $1.34 million, about 26 percent, while Mountain States Tel and AT&T jointly near $200,000. Reappraisal may shift figures but not major shares.
The FBI announced the arrest of a house painter a vacuum cleaner parts salesman and a self styled boxer along with recovery of most of the 240000 ransom in the Sinatra Jr kidnapping case. Sinatra Sr praised his son for information aiding the investigation and the arrests followed a five day secrecy period in Nevada California and San Diego.
Lee W. Sapperstein, a senior at Montana State Mines, is named a Rhodes Scholar among four western students after interviews across seven western states. Other scholars include Richard H. Homquist, Robert Kurdle, and John Norman Westling with Peters Hill a candidate from Montana State College. Sapperstein is the first Mines student to win the honor.
Roger Pierce of Salt Lake City challenged Montanans to reinvest a sizable portion of minerals income for future protection citing Montana School of Mines and Bureau of Mines as growth targets. The Montana AIME section elected Koehler Stout chair and reelected Joseph McAleer secretary treasurer with Archibald, Cadwell, Kettner, and Sneddon among new and reelected directors. Additional notes honored guests from Anaconda Co. and the Northwest regional delegate appointment for AIME.
Leftist VP Juan Lechin and miners holding 21 hostages including four Americans agreed to free them to avoid bloodshed after federal troops encircled Catavi and Siglo Veinte. The plan calls for hostages to be moved by intermediary, troops to withdraw, and a government guarantee of fair trials for unions leaders.
The Helena Post Office teams with Mr Zip to assign 99701 to Santa at the North Pole. Letters to Santa in Helena receive a signed reply from Santa, promising visits to well behaved children. About 100 letters have arrived so far.
Mostly cloudy conditions persist through Monday across East of Divide and West of Divide with light to moderate snow today tonight and Sunday into Monday. Mountain regions may see locally heavy snowfall above 6000 feet, with variable temperatures from lows around 5 to 20 below zero to highs near 32 and 35 degrees in the west.
