Fire at a campus dormitory in the Butte region results in seven coeds dead. Authorities outline investigation while campus officials address safety. Western team rallies to a 75-72 victory as other local items appear on the Mining City page.
Montana officials plan to stop eastbound trucks at the Pipestone summit to warn drivers and check licenses as four fatal semi crashes occur near Whitehall. Protests planned a 10 Wednesday blockade to spotlight hazardous downhill conditions and alleged road design flaws on the I 90 curve.
A lone masked thief, aware a Wells Fargo armored truck would arrive soon, robbed the state liquor store at 1741 Harrison just before 5 45 pm. About $11 000 in cash and checks were taken. The man fled on foot, possibly to a car behind South Side Hardware. No customers were present. Local deputies investigated. witnesses described a pig mask and a brown plaid coat. There are two other state liquor stores in Butte and a Walkerville location.
A chartered DC-3 carrying the University of Evansville basketball team crashed shortly after takeoff near Dress Regional Airport in heavy fog and rain. State police reported one survivor and 31 aboard, including coach Bobby Watson and 14 players. The team was en route to Nashville to play Middle Tennessee State University.
In Silver Bow County nine volunteer departments fear loss of tax autonomy seven months after joining the Butte-Silver Bow joint fire protection district. Some departments reportedly earned up to $1,000 annually from outside fire protection contracts, with funds not fully accounted or placed in the county treasury.
Asarco raises copper to 62.5 cents a pound in a move seen as possibly experimental by analysts, with Anaconda hinting at a 20 cent increase. Economists say global stockpiles and weak next year prospects temper any sustained price upturn.
Farmers and ranchers across Montana plan parades and rallies Wednesday and Thursday to back the American Agriculture Movement strike demanding farm prices at 100 percent of parity. Merchants in several towns will close portions of the day in support, with Bridger merchants pledging one day’s receipts.
