Nineteen first and second year full time UM faculty will be terminated this week as part of a budget plan approved by the Montana Board of Regents. The action targets the College of Arts and Letters and Fine Arts with most cuts in these areas while other professional disciplines see smaller reductions.
U S Ambassador Mike Mansfield warned Tokyo that Japan must do more to reduce the large U S trade deficit. He said relations are at a crisis and urged broader agricultural imports and easier access for U S manufactured goods. If no settlement occurs in 60 to 90 days, protectionist steps could follow.
In Los Angeles George Meany was re elected AFL CIO president for a 12th term amid limited opposition. No challenger appeared but a minority of delegates refused to stand. critic William Winpisinger argued there was not enough opposition. Lane Kirkland retained No 2 post.
The National Right to Work Committee eyes Montana for a ban on compulsory union membership by 1980. Two paths considered are a constitutional amendment via petition drives and a 1979 legislature enacted statute. Key figures include John Bell and Reed Larson, with the Montana affiliate recently formed but lacking momentum. The effort mirrors similar activity in Idaho, Colorado, Vermont and other states as national organizers weigh next year’s political terrain.
A Livingston truck driver Robert LeRoy Karnes 23 and his two year old son died Monday when their eastbound 18 wheeler lost brakes on a curve two miles west of Pipestone on Interstate 90. Karnes wife Pam was listed in critical condition at St James Community Hospital in Butte. The curve eight miles west of Whitehall also claimed a Saturday fatality from a Missoula driver Arthur J Kammerer 29. Jefferson County reports 10 accidents on that stretch in the past month. Karnes reportedly lost air brakes while descending a six percent grade.
