Percy narrowly escapes Vietnam attack

Sen Charles H. Percy R-Ill narrowly escaped a Viet Cong ambush during an unescorted visit to the Dakson massacre site. Rescued by U S Army helicopter gunships after mortars and bullets whizzed by, Percy, a WWII Navy veteran, declared the action closer than any in his three years in the war.

Coast kidnap victim safe two men caught

In Glendale California AP reports the wife of a banker, Mrs Frances Howe, 50, was abducted from her home and released unharmed less than two hours later. Police arrested two men and recovered a $50000 ransom. Howe described two gunmen forcing her inside after a doorbell rang.

Improved programs urged to aid disadvantaged people

John A. Clair acting regional director of the U S Department of Labor Bureau of Works Programs spoke to delegates at the Butte District Office Sponsors Conference. He urged development of quality programs that prepare the disadvantaged for work while fostering community cooperation and personal development. The two day conference at the Finlen Hotel aims to clarify aims of Montana North Dakota Idaho projects. John J Frey Kansas City regional office advised sponsors that the agreements are cost reimbursement contracts. Eight problem areas and contract clauses on accounting were presented to assist programs. JOHN WOODENLEGS chief of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe spoke on Indian issues and the ongoing challenges faced by tribes.

Havre Teacher of the Year Named in Montana

Alice Hemphill, a Havre grade school teacher for 11 years, was chosen Montana Teacher of the Year from 35 nominees. The 45 year old widow of three will be Montana’s nominee for National Teacher of the Year.

Johnson defends Vietnam policy before AFL-CIO delegates

President Johnson told about 2,000 AFL-CIO delegates at a Miami Beach convention that he will press the Vietnam war while pursuing peace, defying polls and elections. He attacked Republicans as wooden soldiers, praised Meany, and urged labor to mobilize for next year’s elections, warning that Congress has been productive but must improve. Hanoi spurns olive branch, he said, as he vows to stand firm and uphold duties to American troops abroad.

Paratroop Push Expands U S 101st Airborne in Vietnam

Two brigades totaling about 10 000 paratroops join the U S 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam increasing American strength to roughly 475 000. AFL-CIO Council Votes $50,000 Copper Strike Fund

Postal servicemen receive pay raises and higher postage

Congress sent to President Johnson a bill delivering a Christmas present of pay raises for 2 million federal workers and 3% million service members plus penny postal rate hikes. The phased increases start Oct 1 with stamps rising Jan 7 and more changes in 1969 and 1970. The package totals about $2.7 billion annually for federal workers and military pay, with postal revenues rising about $900 million yearly once fully in effect.

U S infantry routs Cong attack force

U S forces beat back a mixed Viet Cong and North Vietnamese unit near Saigon 25 miles northwest of the city. About 150 attackers struck before dawn but faced steady fire as they crossed rice paddies. U S troops reported 39 enemy dead and six wounded in the action, with the battle continuing.

James to seek Republican gubernatorial nomination

Frank Murray seeks fourth term as Montana Secretary of State

Frank Murray, Montana's Secretary of State since 1942 and first native to hold the post, filed Tuesday for the Democratic nomination to a fourth term. The 60 year old official paid a 105 filing fee and reiterated his long service record and plans to work for Montana. His wife, Geraldine Jones of Butte, accompanied him at the filing.
