Butte Man Ejected From Carrier Jet In Deck Fire

Butte native Lt. j.g. William H. Cote ejected from a Phantom as a fuel tank ruptured on the USS Independence flight deck. Eleven crews were burned and four injured in the jet fuel fire 225 miles southeast of Norfolk. Cote and a shipmate were rescued by helicopter and returned to the carrier unhurt. The Independence, returning from Vietnam, prepared to berth at Norfolk Naval Base.
