Navy reports a hard fought battle off the northwest Leyte coast where ten vessels from an eleven-ship convoy were destroyed. American PT boats sank a 5,000-ton cargo transport as planes and ships pressed the fight. The Seventh and 77th divisions tightened their hold around Ormoc as Japanese resistance flagging.
A Colorado water expert warned the Missouri Valley Authority would impose federal power, endangering Western water rights. Judge Clifford Stone urged defeating the Murray bill, urging coordination of national and local interests, citing the TVA as a cautionary example of finance and flood control impacts. He argued the Army Engineers and Bureau of Reclamation plans should align with state programs, calling the TVA model flawed for harming tax bases and farmlands.
American First Army troops broke through seven fortified villages west of the Roer, pushing toward Duren and reaching a 1000 yard front east of Hurtgen forest. Lt. Gen. CHUNGKING Dec 12 Chinese troops advanced into Kwangsi province along the Kweichow Kwangsi railway seizing Nan ton and Mang chang. The Japanese, ousted from Kweichow, retreat toward Hochih as American air support crushes strong points. Chinese forces shift troops from the north in anticipation of a renewed Japanese drive.
London reports Soviet forces breached northeast defenses near Budapest and captured Godollo, a key rail fortress, as Malinovsky’s Second Ukraine army advances. The communique listed ten more towns north of Miskolc and tallied 7,450 enemy dead or captured in seven days, with many German tanks destroyed and planes downed.
Silver Bow county neared the 100 percent mark in Sixth War Loan quotas but individual E bond sales lagged, risking the county's overall goal with four days left. County finance chair Max Dean noted the corporation quota of 1,677,800 was met, while E bond goals of 816,700 remain unmet, requiring about 300,000 more in four days. Total E F G and other individual bonds reached 1,881,638.75, aiding three of four planned B-29 bombers, with 396,361.25 still needed to top the county drive before the December 15 deadline.
The Office of Price Administration announced a four cent per bushel increase in the ceiling price of wheat. Effective tomorrow, the rise supports parity for producers under the 1944 stabilization extension act and covers all distribution levels. Bread prices stay unchanged and flour ceilings remain, with subsidies kept at 19 cents per bushel until December 31. A January rate will be set later this month.
James P. Ellis a 36 year old former Butte resident and 19 month Navy veteran was killed November 19 in a hit run near Camp Parks California while receiving malaria treatment. Survived by wife Minnie Ellis Seattle relatives include mother Mrs James Healy sister Mrs Marcella Lavell and two nephews. Military funeral services were held in San Francisco. Ellis recently returned from a South Pacific tour and was awarded a Presidential citation medal for service on Los Negros island.
On December 12 the Eighth army offensive toward Faenza stalled as Apennine floods swelled the Lamone to seven to eight feet with currents of eight to ten mph. Patrols lingered in the hills southwest of Faenza as the Allied bridgehead surpassed five miles. Four German planes were shot down on the Fifth army front while Luftwaffe activity dropped incendiaries and strafed supply lines. Fifth army units fought in the Bologna hill regions and German artillery roared along the Tyrrhenian coast.
Allied air assaults persisted round the clock with RAF joining American bombers from Britain and Italy in strikes on Ruhr targets. Over 3,000 tons dumped by the US Eighth Air Force on Frankfurt rail facilities. nine bombers and nine fighters missing. RAF Lancasters and Halifaxes hit Essen while Mosquitoes bomb Osnabruck. Italy-based units attacked the Blechhammer refinery in Silesia and RAF forces struck Witten with minimal flak and no bomber losses.
The Navy said on Tuesday the submarine Rasher received a Presidential Unit Citation for sinking or damaging thousands of tons of shipping in Japanese controlled waters.
In Athens the Eam Elas fighters were told surrender of arms and a halt to hostilities were prerequisites to a settlement. Field Marshal Alexander and Harold Macmillan witnessed peace feelers while British terms were delivered by Maj. Gen. Scobie to Miltades Pophorogenis. The British require the Blas fighting arm of the Eam to obey orders and for Attica forces to cease fighting.
