Thundering artillery rocked Nanking as Chinese defenders battled 240,000 Japanese troops at the city walls. Flames lit the 32 mile perimeter while U S S Panay officials considered moving up the Yangtze. Americans hid in bomb shelters as air raids shook positions near the embassy.
Thousands flee as rivers flood 30 towns from the Oregon line to the lower San Joaquin. Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys face peak rise. Red Cross units mobilized in 22 towns. About 1,000 isolated in Yosemite. at least 10 missing or possibly drowned. transportation snarled statewide.
Three people died in two separate ice related crashes near Big Sandy as a Fort Peck woman Mrs. James J. Halloran and two men Arthur Rabey and Ben Bentley perished. Delp transported the bodies to town after locating the victims at the wrecks. The highway between Big Sandy and Loma was closed for sanding.
Dr. T J B Shanley was named district chairman for the Jackson Day dinner in Butte on January 8. Grover Cisel of the Democratic state central committee appointed him, noting five counties Silver Bow Deer Lodge Powell Madison and Beaverhead will cooperate. Roosevelt will address via radio for 30 minutes. Details await a county chairmen meeting.

D B Deffenbacher, WPA adviser, arrives from Washington with a director named to attend. District Judge Ben Harwood will sentence him at 2 PM Wednesday. The case stems from a post Thanksgiving dispute over 180 bushels of wheat at an elevator.
WPA Administrator Harry Hopkins was taken to a Rochester hospital for a general examination by Mayo Clinic doctors. He said he feels great and is undergoing a routine physical.
Butte High will offer home economics courses next semester expanding the department to three years. Miss Agnes Rossiter and Miss Myrtle Stewart will direct the program in the new building with a four room model apartment. Junior and senior girls register tomorrow and Tuesday as students select second semester courses. Washington Junior high also schedules registration.
