Roosevelt urges a liquor tax law to oust bootleggers as Senate and House committee leaders are called to conference at the White House on the tax situation. The session aims to settle thorny revenue measures and outline a definite program for reform.

Tonight marks payments for 1650 civic workers in the Butte district with checks ready on demand upon proper ID. Next week 3600 more will be paid on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday as time keepers notify each project to call for checks.
Deer Lodge National Forest allows private use tree cutting without permit with cautions to respect private property and avoid highway areas. Commercial cutting requires sale permits and is limited to Philipsburg and Boulder Ranger districts.

Representative Ray N Shannon of Thompson Falls drafts a relief bill to tax wines liquors and whiskies at one dollar and license retail dealers for 35 dollars. State control would run three warehouses with posted prices and off premise sales only.
Blizzards floods and record cold swept the nation causing six deaths, one missing, and extensive damage. Four killed in a Bellefonte crash, three burned in Hampden dance hall fire, two dead from cold in Philadelphia and nearby areas. Snow blanketed the East while ice slowed Northwest transport and planes crashed in western Pennsylvania but pilots escaped. Weather officials warned of further drops in many cities.
The National Association of Saw Dust and Shavings Dealers held a department of ecommerce conclave noting times change and freight worries. A member argued for tonnage and rebates while others focused on the saloon's return and continued dust demand. The discussion hinted at future market shifts.
Chester C. Davis will succeed George N. Peek as head of the farm administration. Regional totals include Montana where tax delinquency and farming finance studies will be conducted.
Speaker Dellno after talks with Gov. Cooney and the revenue committee outlined a fixed relief program seeking about 1.55 million dollars for county relief. Sources say funds would come from a sales tax cut, beer and gambling receipts, gasoline taxes, inheritance tax, and other measures with surplus reverting to the state general fund.
The Montana house adopted a rules change to curb bill introduction after December 14 requiring two thirds majority for new measures except expenses, while allowing majority for introductions. Four measures advanced to the senate, including a plan for local government loans with the federal recovery administration.
Governor Cooney signed Senate Bills 4 and 5, designed to help banks obtain federal recovery funds. One act allows solvent banks to borrow on non-assessible preferred stock to rebuild capital. the other lets insolvent banks borrow on frozen assets to pay depositors.
