President Eisenhower and Prime Minister Nehru received an overwhelming greeting in New Delhi as crowds thronged the streets. Secret Service had to push back the press of humanity while Nehru waved and the president stood amid petals and cheers.
About 1,200 families and single men lose county welfare relief as an emergency order by County Commissioner Gene Daly stops all general welfare orders until further notice. The move, triggered by depleted funds since Aug 19 amid a strike against Anaconda Co, seeks to confirm a state grant and urges rapid auditing and return of orders from merchants. Western division manager C D Michaelson of Kennecott Copper Corp charges Mine-Mill with publishing two glaring vicious falsehoods in a bulletin to members. He says the bulletin spreads misinformation during the 122 day strike hindering a settlement. Verdu and Curtis deny any firings or discipline.
An East German streetcar jumped the tracks in Dresden on Wednesday, killing 11 passengers. The accident halted service and prompted authorities to launch an investigation into the cause.
Mostly cloudy conditions with highs 35 to 50 in the east and 30 to 42 in the west. Light snow develops over western mountains Thursday night and spreads eastward Friday with little temperature change Thursday night and cooler highs Friday. Lows range 20 to 35 in the east and 10 to 25 in the west.
The Ivy Bluff prison break ringleader Charles W. Stewart and two other escapees were captured with a hostage in Pilot Virginia. FBI and Virginia State Police recovered them from an abandoned house about 20 miles west of Roanoke. The FBI identified the hostage as a man only known as Jonas Soares.
Sheriff W L Dalling said two of three Butte men held in North Dakota admitted a weekend burglary of the Rose Garden Tavern at 1801 S Montana. About $600 in cash whisky and cigarettes was stolen. Clayton Marquardt and Claude Vail signed statements. Daniel Marquardt also held. The trio is detained in Stanley N D and faced aggravated assault charges from an AP report. bond set at 1000 dollars each.
Butte has become the Christmas rush terminal for distributing parcel post from the south via Union Pacific trains. Dan Corbitt, mails superintendent, said the switch from Billings speeds delivery across the state. Two Salt Lake City railway mail clerks will sort during the peak Dec 14 to 24 as 140 sacks arrive in the morning.
Oscar E. Cutting was appointed city manager of Bozeman on Wednesday, succeeding M. E. Henderson who retires December 31 after 22 years in the role. Cutting, 56, a Hinsdale native, has served as Henderson’s administrative assistant since July 1955 and holds a mechanical engineering degree from Montana State College. He was selected from 35 candidates by the City Commission.

Donald Tavenner, a veteran and third generation sheepman from Deer Lodge, was unanimously chosen 1960 president of the Montana Wool Growers Association at the 76th state convention in Billings. He succeeds Dan Fulton of Ismay and vows to tackle upcoming 1960 challenges.
Butte police investigated a Tuesday night incident where a blasting cap or similar device damaged Lyle Shanklin’s 1959 Chevrolet Impala parked at 1834 Lowell. Shanklin reported hearing an explosion and found a hole in the car’s hood.
Judge John Seton acquitted Grace Monger in a police court trial on a charge of failing to yield to a police vehicle on an emergency call in Butte. Officer Ed Moser testified Monger refused to yield to the escorting police car as she drove a doctor to a local hospital. Monger contended her husband was a passenger and she was taking him to the same hospital.
A severe storm capsized two ships and caused 109 deaths across five days. The Norwegian freighter Elfrida sank with 20 crew off Lista Lighthouse, while the Merkur lost seven crew and the Benella recovered six bodies. Captain John Vitoria of the Anna stayed aboard until rescued.
The American Sheep Producers Council plans to discontinue its million-dollar plus annual grant to the Wool Bureau. It will instead fund its own promotion of American model wool products and pull out of the Wool Bureau in July. The council will still work with the bureau and other industry groups.
Lutheran Hospitals and Homes Society and Methodist Hospital Assn have finished surveys of Butte Community Memorial Hospital. Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth will be invited to survey and possibly propose operation. Greater Butte Community HospitalCorp seeks an experienced group to take over operations.
Montana district judges arrive in Helena for the annual conference called by Chief Justice James T. Harrison. Judge Philip C. Duncan presides as Montana Judges' Association president with new officers to be nominated Friday. Speakers include Warden Floyd Powell, Art J Baker, Chief Justice Harrison, Franklin Robbie, and Judges Lobbe and Lessley discussing court rules, public welfare, and citizenship programs.
