British raid in Egypt nets 1000 prisoners in dawn assault

British armored desert fighters struck at dawn near Sidi Barrani and Madeya capturing about 1000 Italian prisoners by nightfall. The raid killed the Italian commander and captured his aide as fighting continued south of the area. Phosphate Industry Leader Addresses Montana Institute Meeting

Chester A. Fulton president of the Southern Phosphate Corporation told Montana section of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers at the Montana School of Mines Butte Country Club that non metallic industries offer fertile mining and metallurgical potential. He noted wartime export losses offset by English sales and increased use of phosphate as fertilizer. New Montana section officers were elected including Selden S. Rodgers vice chairman and Charles C. Goddard Jr secretary treasurer.

Lovers in Butte Shootout Leaves Victims Near Death

Edward Jelich 26 and Barbara Welter 23 of Butte are hospitalized in St. James after a dawn shooting at a South Butte street intersection. Jelich, a miner, is gravely wounded with multiple skull fragments. Welter has two head wounds from a separated front and side shot. Police say Jelich, angered by a wedding postponement, wounded Welter then shot himself after leaving a note of murder and his own death. The incident occurred near Lowell avenue and Majors street before 8 am as Welter walked to her job at Miners dairy. Continued on Page 2.

The Butte Mines band the only industrial group to win a national title held its 36th annual dinner at the Rocky Mountain cafe Meaderville. Sam Treloar director since 1887 served as toastmaster with 36 members present including veterans Thomas Johns Ben Ivey Frank Holly Maurice Moore and George Wilcox. Guests included Mayor Charles A Hauswirth George N Short and Ernest Hardcastle. Mayor Hauswirth noted his father Simon Hauswirth played with Butte's first band in 1879 1880 1881.
