In Beirut on Monday Moslem militiamen led by Palestinian guerrillas overran Jewish and Christian quarters engaging defenders in hand to hand combat amid mortar and rocket fire.
Fighting rages across Beirut as Lebanese army commandos retake areas near the House of Parliament and financial district. Moslem factions press assaults in Ashrafiyeh and Ein Rumanneh while Christian militias defend the banks district and hotel area. Rockets and mortars halt Parliament meetings, with casualties and displacement reported amid a volatile security crisis.
Former Butte mayor Tom Powers, 57, had bribery and related felony charges dismissed at the request of state prosecutors after a year of anxiety for the Powers family. He stood near the jury in Anaconda court as his trial collapsed amid statements of support from friends and his wife Rose. The motion to dismiss cited insufficient evidence to convict, ending a Montana history making case that drew courtroom crowds.
George Drum Hewitt 59 of 710 Oak Anaconda becomes Silver Bow County 16th traffic fatality in 1975. His 1975 Chevrolet Nova rolled after leaving Centennial Avenue, trapping him beneath the car. Hewitt, an insurance salesman born in September 1916 in Oneida New York, is survived by his wife Dorothy and four children.
Community Development Director Don Peoples announced a Harrison Avenue upgrade from Front Street viaduct to Grand Avenue with an estimated 248000 cost. Total next year funding of 1404000 aims to allocate 180000 to Harrison, with about 38500 assessed to residents and 30000 sought from the State Highway Department. The plan shifts the City Corral to expand Civic Center space, includes new clubs and sidewalks, median and boulevard work, and 15000 for trees with sprinklers. A traffic system upgrade north of the Civic Center would add 28000 for a full time signal. The project would move ahead via a City Council committee if approved, with planning funds of 50000 for the Corral move. Construction could start next summer and finish by STREET Page 8.
From a Baltimore warehouse the Pallottines mailed 106 million fund raising letters last year, a sweepstakes included, with estimates of up to 15 million in revenue. Maryland officials question spending 90 percent of contributions on mailings while little cash reached missions.
Cleveland AP Lincoln Electric Co payments set a Christmas record with 2,369 workers receiving a $27.5 million bonus, the fourth straight record year and 42nd overall. Average per worker is about $11,608, based on piece work merit and corporate stock control.
A Montana State Board committee postponed a planned policy on closing schools during teacher strikes for further study. The Accreditation and Certification Committee will review a draft statement on closures in unusual circumstances, with Dolores Colburg noting it is not yet ready. A petitions stack from Concerned Citizens of Billings was shown, and a separate proposal to revise substitute teacher hiring was also postponed for review.
Ex convict Medlin identified by the Justice Department as an ex con leaves Holiday Inn in Tampa with nearly $10,000 CBS advanced to lead a news crew to Hoffa’s body. Medlin claims to have learned details of Hoffa’s disappearance from a Miami hit man and says Hoffa lies submerged off Key West in 12 feet of water two and a half miles out. CBS and Harpers editors pursued the story, filming a fruitless boat search and recording hours of tapes amid the unfolding deception.
Dillon burial notices report H R Peterson a prominent Big Hole and Beaverhead rancher and former National Amateur Trapshooting Association president who died at his Dillon area home. Born August 8 1909 in Butte he built a life around ranching and shotting circles and married Aileen Berry in 1933.
