Special Patrolman Aaron Robert Ball died of a groin wound in Portland after shooting Louis Fugent, 46, whom he surprised in a tire shop. Ball cuffed the man, phoned the owner, then was shot as the suspect grabbed Ball's gun. Ball died hours later following transfusions.
Sen John W Bricker told NAM leaders that big government is the greatest threat to American institutions warning of state socialism and a police state. He urged a program of permanent progress including cutting government costs reducing debt and taxes to spur individual genius and incentive. He warned the welfare state risks economic collapse and loss of freedom amid discussions by business leaders at the NAM congress.
Sofia report says five more defendants in Traicho Kostov treason trial admitted guilt and blamed Kostov. They join Ivan Stefanov, Nokita Nachev, Boris Christov, Tsonov Tsonchev, and others accused of espionage and treachery. Lt Gen Leslie R Groves head of the wartime atomic bomb project says he withheld several secret atomic reports from former Vice President Henry A Wallace. They pace at five miles per hour amid near hurricane winds as the Lakeland Victory also sails toward Taku Bar to pick up Consul General Angus Ward and his staff from Communist Chinese soil.

The plan cuts spending by 7.5 billion below current estimates, a smaller reduction than Byrd's prior proposal of 10 billion. Prisoners armed with potash bombs and sharp tools barricaded a barracks at Big Pine Key state camp, 120 miles south of Miami. One inmate was killed, a officer and a trusty burned, and the revolt ended at dusk after guards and police used tear gas and oil was poured on bunks.
Washington December 8. John L. Lewis and independent soft coal operators under his new wage contract face a broker boycott.
