Northwest Republican senators split from regulars while Democrats form a solid front as Congress opens after Hoover's message. House Democrats win early by standing together, while Senate Democrats hold firm in a stalemate. A 145 member bill move possible. prohibition vote expected.
About 900 University of Wyoming students walked out after Dr A G Crane refused to apologize for a remark about couples in cars at a college dance. A truce was signed granting a hearing before the board of trustees and a temporary return to classes. The action followed a mass meeting to end the disturbance.
Paris dispatch reports two major issues age war reparations and disarmament overshadowing European negotiations. A new move to postpone the 1932 world disarmament conference at Geneva is under way despite ongoing discussions.
President Hoover outlined to Congress a package to restore confidence including a temporary tax hike a reconstruction corporation to aid credit and a banking and anti trust overhaul. He urged action on international debts and foreign affairs while Bills were introduced to establish the reconstruction corporation with federal funds to aid industries and a home loan system.
President Hoover asks Congress to enact a reconstruction finance corporation to extend support to railroads industries financial institutions and agriculture and to facilitate export trade. He warns recovery hinges on addressing credit paralysis and economic laws beyond regulation.
City Superintendent Ragsdale told the board that Butte high school cafeteria ran 62 days with a gross of 1660 dollars and a net of 33.50 dollars. It served 22 831 meals, averaging 148 cents per person, with about 368 customers daily. The district employs nine fewer teachers than last year. A resident protest over school transportation was tabled.
The Butte chapter of the American Red Cross re elected all executive officers and directors at its annual meeting held yesterday at the Butte Chamber of Commerce. Dr H D Kistler heads the executive committee as chairman, Fred Gamer was elected a director to fill a vacancy.
Mrs. Minnie Hiner of Portland head of Neighbors of Woodcraft arrived in Butte for a joint meeting of five local circles at St. Johns hall. Nearly 300 members welcomed her and a dinner at Finlen Hotel preceded a program of music dancing and remarks on the home in Riverside Cal where 100 aged members are cared for. Hiner noted 86000 members in 600 circles across nine western states and praised Butte's 1700 members in five groups. She departs for Bozeman today to initiate 50 new members and will attend another meeting in Philipsburg before returning to Portland.
Doc Flynn, a well known Butte sportsman, was admitted to Murray hospital again yesterday in critical condition. He had been nearing recovery from a recent illness when he suffered a relapse Monday night.
Montana outlook for Wednesday shows unsettled conditions with possible snow and colder air in the southeast. By Thursday a trend toward generally fair weather is expected across the state.
Leonard Eliel prominent Dillon merchant and founder of the Eliel Brothers store, died at his South Washington home after several weeks illness. Born July 4, 1847 in Germany he came to America as a youth and helped establish Dillon shortly after the town’s founding in 1880. He was 84.
Japanese forces report a widening campaign against bands described as bandits. Fighting spans from Mukden to Tsitsihar with Tungliao farm siege by 700 bandits near Okura estate. Siege endured 72 hours. 300 attackers remained at large.
Five liquor law offenders were jailed in Missoula as Federal Judge George M. Bourquin warned that any repeat offense would carry a two year sentence. The defendants had prior similar counts. among them were Frank Pugin and Lawrence Bear.
A great horned owl was shot and killed near the Travonia mine by Leslie Hardy using a .22 rifle after the bird attacked a mine cat and perched on a building. The owl, with a 56 inch wingspan, was seen on the mine, then swooped the cat but missed, prompting Hardy to take action. The bird is noted as a destructive predator of upland game birds in the region.
Five people remained in the city jail as county authorities announced an autopsy for Margaret Dot Wilson a 22 year old Cuban girl found shot in a cabin at 3072 East Platinum Street. County attorney J Justin Bourquin said officers want the bullet recovered for ballistics study.
Eugene Carroll general manager of the Butte Water company is seriously ill at his home 315 West Granite street. Doctors H J McDonald and Caroline McGill say the condition is not dangerous for now after a severe pneumonia attack that began last Friday.

Mrs Hattie Caraway began her senate career with a rapid sequence of events on December 8 voting for party candidate Key Pittman after a tense lunch detour. The first woman to serve as an active senator followed the roll call as 95 men stood before her. The clerk paused at her title during the roll call.
Ely Culbertson, trailing 1715 points in a 150 rubbers match with Sidney S. Lenz, offered to bet $1000 against $500 and up to $25000 at 2 to 1 on him and his wife beating Lenz and Oswald Jacoby. Seven rubbers were played with Lenz and Jacoby taking four. Culbertsons now 2075 behind. Hotel Chatham New York December 8.
