Snow and sleet caused school closures and travel disruptions from Pennsylvania to Virginia and Georgia. Lancaster County saw up to 12 inches, other areas 2 to 8 inches, with thousands losing power and motorists stranded on the Turnpike near Morgantown. Virginia and North Carolina report heavy snowfall in the Appalachians while Georgia hills faced impassable roads. A Butte man Milton C. Morley 32 and his brother-in-law Virgil Dana Merrill 24 both killed in a one car crash on the Butte Helena highway eight miles north of Butte. Jack Osman Davis 27 of Helena critically injured. car registered to Davis. Morley father of eight. Merrill's wife and child with her parents in Walkerville. Coroner Leonard Scott and local deputies handled identification. bodies at Duggan Merrill Mortuary. Davis hospitalized at Community Memorial. Judge W. D. Murray left Monday for Hawaii to preside for four weeks in the federal court in Honolulu. With Hawaii a state, federal judges for the district are not yet appointed, so Ninth Circuit judges are temporarily assigned to the post.
AP reports wolves killed about 30 cattle dogs in Alijo over the weekend. The attackers reportedly leaped penned livestock and devoured the dogs when they could not reach them.
The International Union of Mine Mill and Smelter Workers asked the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service to intervene in the 120 day Kennecott Copper strike. Union regional director Verne Curtis called an impasse and cited issues beyond a no strike clause. Kennecott labeled Mine Mill evasive and torpedoing talks while expressing willingness to negotiate. The strike has cost Utah salaries totaling about 11.45 million dollars. Federal mediators were to respond soon after weekend negotiations.
Senate Antitrust subcommittee finds major drug firm paid 11.7 cents per batch for a medicine and sold to druggists for 8.40 dollars, a 7079 percent markup. Harold R. Brown, 34, 6 foot 5, 230-pound construction worker, was charged in an information with murder in the beating death of his divorced wife Verna Gae Brown, 31, on November 26. Valley County Attorney Gordon White filed the charge. Brown remains in custody without bail. The judge postponed the hearing to Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. and listed about 20 witnesses. Brown was arrested November 27 in Bismarck after allegedly admitting the Thanksgiving morning attack in Glasgow.
