The 1974 Democratic mid term conference in Kansas City is marked by debate and speculation about 1976. Governors and senators including George Wallace Henry Jackson and Lloyd Bentsen host suites and meetings as delegates seek new directions and a path past Vietnam divisions.
Gov. Thomas L. Judge told Montana delegates that Washington is not the sole democracy driver and urged returning power to state and local governments. He plans to assert Montana’s right to govern natural resources and air water and land protections amid federal roadblocks. Judge was elected chairman with Robin Hatch as vice chairman and a 12 member panel naming Ruth Carrington recording secretary and Sen elect Thomas E. Towe coordinator.
Stephen LaDue and his family stopped for gas in Cincinnati when a Siamese cat named Bailey appeared in the engine bay. The cat had presumably wandered from Medina, Ohio, and rejoined his owner after 200 miles of travel inside the car.
Kansas City AP Democrats attack Ford leadership and rally support for an eight point program to fight inflation and recession. Delegates endorse a 1975 economic agenda including tax reform national health insurance and a public service jobs plan while pledging swift action in 1975 and a 1976 presidential bid.
The American Newspaper Publishers Association reports a shift in daily paper pricing with 10 cent dailies dropping by about half, 15 cent papers more than doubling, and 20 cent editions rising to about 50 titles. Sunday prices also rise with the Boston Globe at 75 cents per copy.
A lawyer for Mallinckrodt Penick and Merck warned that a formal bulk codeine rationing program will be inevitable in early 1975. She said shortages could reach about 20 percent as India limits opium supply, threatening narcotic pain and cough medicines.
In Burma the government closed all universities colleges and schools after Buddhists seized the body of former U.N. Secretary‑General U Thant. About 20 000 followers including students and monks seized the casket at Rangoon University delaying funeral plans. Thant died in New York on November 25 at age 65.
Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, speaking at a national population conference, says India's birth control efforts have not been impressive and blames Developed nations for global economic woes. She links family planning to literacy and rural health, urging official action as India nears a billion in population.
A blind newspaper and concession stand operator, Clifford Burrill, was shot dead at point-blank range in a Detroit parking lot. He carried about $300 in receipts when a gunman demanded money. Two youths were taken into custody as detectives traced the gunman through fresh snow.
Montana Fish and Game tentatively backs a nonfederal share of the 5.8 million Boulder River Watershed Project to dam the Little Boulder River south of Boulder. The plan includes strict conditions on water quality, sediment controls, year round flow, and full access for fishermen while landowners weigh legislative funding. Skyline Sportsmen and Trout Unlimited oppose state money for the dam and urge buying trout waters and aiding navigability rulings instead.

Anaconda Co. pauses underground mine layoffs until after Jan. 1 and may keep some cleanup work into 1975. Frank Monninger, head of Montana mining, told reporters that 106 miners laid off so far could rise to 646 before the phase-out ends, with total workforce at 2,800. He noted earlier studies favored closing the vein and that several plans since June were unprofitable. The Senate hearing led by Sen. Metcalf prompted the update and promised full transcripts after mid-December.
A woman and two men were arraigned before Dist. Judge John B. McClernan on charges of deliberate homicide and robbery in the Thanksgiving night murder of Raymond Joseph Merrick at the Community Gas Station. They were granted until December 13 to enter pleas.
Two inches of snow blanketed the Mining City on Friday as cars slid and fenders bent. Arlene Sayers, 39, was treated and released after a collision on the Continental Drive overpass involving a car driven by her son Dave and another vehicle driven by John Chevellier. A highway spokesman said roads were sanded and traffic was light. Forecast calls for variable clouds with possible snowshowers, high 35, low 20.
