Judge Murray to retire from Montana bench in 1965

U S District Judge William D. Murray will retire December 31 1965 after 16 1 2 years on the Montana bench due to health. At 57 he plans to continue as senior judge under Ninth Circuit rules and will handle first week trials in January. He serves as Montana chief district judge and praises colleagues staff and family while thanking them for support.

De Gaulle Falls Short in First French Presidential Ballot

Paris AP reports Charles de Gaulle failed to win a majority in the presidential election, forcing a runoff set for December 19. Francois Mitterrand led with 32 percent, Jean Lecannet trailed, and De Gaulle captured 44 percent amid 21 million votes counted.

Smith Seen as Possible Successor to Montana Judge Murray

Russell E. Smith of Missoula a former Montana Bar Association president is expected to succeed the ailing W. D. Murray as a federal judge in Montana. His name has been sent to Attorney General Katzenbach by President Johnson with Senate support from Mansfield and Metcalf. Smith would expand Montana’s federal judges to three while remaining largely based in Missoula and Helena.

Billings Mayors Share Turkey After Trapshoot Victory

Big Timber Mayor Henry Klindt ate crow after losing to Billings Mayor Willard Fraser in a trapshoot. Fraser hosted a Thanksgiving for the press as both mayors joined in a 24 pound turkey feast. Fraser hit 11 of 15 clay pigeons to Klindt’s 10 and Klindt supplied the turkey.

Gemini 7 Orbit to be Circularized for Rendezvous Plan

Gemini 7 remains on a normal course though its egg shaped orbit of 138 by 199 miles must be circularized to about 185 miles. If rendezvous occurs, the critical burn could come Monday night or Tuesday. a star measurement fault and a persistent Delta P indicator remain under review. Ground control may send Gemini 6 to inspect a mysterious tape like object seen near Lovell’s window.

A Lima liquor store was broken into over the weekend stealing more than 27 cases of whiskey and bourbon valued at 1700 dollars. Montana law enforcement agencies across southwest Montana were searching for clues in the case.

U S Troops Clash With Reds on Michelin Plantation

U S forces and an estimated regiment of Viet Cong fought on the Michelin Rubber Plantation near Saigon. Officials say more than 100 Reds were killed, with moderate U S casualties. The battle involved two battalion sized units of the 1st Infantry Division and followed Sunday skirmishes. A second sweep saw a Marine task force storm a coastal stronghold about 260 miles northeast of Saigon.

The Federal Reserve Board ordered a rate increase from 4 to 4.5 percent on the discount rate and boosted the maximum deposit-rate to 5.5 percent, maintaining 4 percent on regular savings. President Johnson criticized the action from his Texas ranch, noting the board acts independently and expressing regret over higher borrowing costs while pledging coordinated economic policy.

Deadly fumes threat forces evacution in Camden Arkansas

Missoula Carpenter Kegley Dies In Orchard Homes Fire

The body of Glynn Kegley, 30, a Missoula roomer, was found in a burned white frame house in Orchard Homes. Firefighters arrived at 4 15 a m and couldn't save the home. A passerby, Tom O Connor, alerted residents after two trips through smoke. A red Cocker Spaniel survived near the basement water heater.

Cyprus crisis sparks Greek Turkish threat protest at UN

Greek Foreign Minister Elias Tsirimakos formally complained to UN Secretary General Thant about Turkish war threats over Cyprus. A Turkish spokesman denied threats, saying Turkey warned against a Greek Cyprus formula that could spark an explosion and called on Thant on November 26.
