State Unemployment Benefit Payments Hit Record Half Billion

Montana workers collected more than half a billion dollars from over 15 000 employers in the year ending June 30. The State Employment Service notes payroll gains across major industries led by manufacturing and construction with other sectors advancing. Yellowstone County led insured wages at 72.1 million, Cascade 71.8 million, Silver Bow 49.6 million, Missoula 39.5 million, Flathead 25.1 million, and Lewis and Clark 23.5 million.

Billings truck driver found guilty of manslaughter

Bur ton W. McNeil, a 34 year old Billings truck driver, was found guilty of manslaughter for the Sept 24 shooting of Frank Reichert outside a Billings Heights cafe. The jury reached its verdict after 13 hours of deliberation and sentencing is scheduled for Friday at 1:30 p.m.

Garbage Dump Dispute Appeals in Montana Supreme Court

The Harveys appeal a Fergus County case over the Lewistown area garbage dump. Congress Extends Mexican Farm Labor Plan One Year

Congress votes 53 to 36 to extend the bracero program through December 31 1964. Sen Ellender assures the program will expire after 1964 while Sen Holland and Sen Allott insist a one year extension is needed to wind up affairs as demand for 200000 Mexican workers next year is noted. A House version is sent to President Johnson for signature.
