SALT LAKE CITY AP Both sides reported progress after Friday talks between Kennecott Copper Corp officials and the International Union of Mine Mill and Smelter Workers. They plan more talks Saturday but union leader Verne Curtis said no progress on two main issues: no strike clause in a new contract and opposition to outside contractors for maintenance. Mine Mill represents about 5 000 of Kennecott’s 10 000 workers who struck August 10 across Utah Nevada Arizona and New Mexico. Only USW representing about 2 300 has accepted a blanket two year contract with a 22.3 cent hourly package increase and a no strike clause. Pre strike pay ranged 15.55 to 24.78 per day. Striking railway unions posted pickets at Garfield Utah plants, delaying work. Curtis criticized a company letter accusing Mine Mill of dragging feet and said he seeks a settlement but won’t sacrifice workers’ rights.

School Exhibit Continues at Butte Depot Sunday
The School room Progress USA exhibit moves through wooden to glass chalk boards from the 1800s to 1960s. It remains open at the Union Pacific Northern Pacific Station until 6 p.m. Sunday drawing many visitors including delegations from Anaconda.
