The Japanese advance nears Nanking with the capital's gates shut and civilians fleeing. Americans aboard the gunboat Panay steam to safety on the Yangtze as relief workers prepare for up to 200,000 evacuees. The Chinese garrison fortifies defenses and vows to resist.
A British mercy ship Siushan was sprayed with bullets as it tried to evacuate nine French Canadian nuns from Tsungming island near Shanghai. Chinese chief officer died and a sailor and several passengers were wounded in the unseen gunfire.
The American Federation of Labor executive council completed a wage hour bill proposal to equalize conditions across regions. The plan sets a 40 cent minimum wage, a 40 hour work week, with Justice Department prosecutions and $100 fines per offense. President Green described it as a substitute for the administration bill.
London reports indicate Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain will present a cabinet approved plan to protect British interests in Shanghai and Hongkong. The move follows Japanese forces advancing through the International Settlement and comes after consultations with Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden. Verne John Nimmo and Charles Elmer Smith both 17 were involved in a Friday night shooting at the Hansen Packing plant cabin authorities say Smith confessed. The fatal card game for fun ended with Nimmo shot as he ran from the room.

Loyalist dispatches say a large Franco front air strike hit Almudovar, a key Franco base near Huesca. Twenty bombers and three fighter squadrons allegedly wrecked the fortified town, dropping tons of explosives and possibly delaying Franco's drive to reach the seacoast and isolate Madrid.
Deputies in County Treasurer George OBrien's office announced more than 500000 dollars collected toward the 700000 anticipated for 1937 tax payments. Payments include first-half and full dues mailed before November 1 and received by midnight November 30. Delinquencies to be listed after November returns are finalized midweek. Second-half 1937 taxes are due in May with amounts not yet checked.
