Postal inspectors investigate a mailed threat against Joseph V. Flaherty, a 30 year court stenographer who resigned to testify in an election contest in Montana. The envelope bore clipped headlines and the words Butte Montana. Flaherty declined to discuss the matter.
Chester Ternan, 31, a rancher six miles south of Belgrade, saved his 2-year-old son before reentering the blaze to rescue his other boy, Charles, but both died in smoke and flames. Neighbors and the Belgrade fire department could not save the home. the wife, uninjured, said the fire started as fuel spilled from a five gallon can. The younger child survived with burns and is expected to recover.
Washington dispatch reports John Hamilton will resign as Republican National Committee chairman at a December 17 meeting in Chicago. He cites inability to continue without confidence and pledges full effort to reduce the party deficit of 1.3 million dollars. Possible chair replacement and party liberalization discussions loom.
Edward VIII chose between throne and Wallis Warfield Simpson after an hour with Prime Minister Baldwin. Mrs Simpson fled to Evreux France as Baldwin pressed the royal, imperial stakes. The decision, to be shared with Parliament, capped a week of crisis and closures in London.

A 31 plane rebel assault over Madrid dropped bombs on the Rosales district and strafed panicked civilians. Women and children fled through streets and into doorways while homes were blown up by incendiaries, with many casualties reported.
A partial canvassing board delay halted the start of a recount for judicial ballots in 40 of Silver Bow county's 63 precincts. Judge Frank P. Leiper of Glendive ordered the recount. he will open court in Mining City to review related matters. Commissioners Batani and Merkle formed the board. Emmet O'Brien remained briefed as the process paused.
Butte considered becoming a regional livestock hub with a proposed stock sales yard after a Chamber of Commerce meeting. Berlin December 4. General Goering head of the four year plan for economic recovery orders every German boy and girl to gather beechnuts this weekend. The Hitler Youth numbering six million is to search forests for beechnuts to produce cooking oil and ease the fat shortage nationwide.
Washington December 4. Congress appears set to aid 32 states unable to pass social security legislation before the December 31 deadline. Senator Joseph T. Robinson and Arkansas Governor-elect Bailey discussed options to avoid penalizing states that lack regular sessions for enacting social security laws.
The Montana forecast calls for fair skies and continued cold conditions through Saturday and Sunday. No precipitation is expected as high pressure settles over the region, with temperatures dipping into the lows for overnight lows.
Spokane reports the Northwest Mining association convention hearing a maritime strike impact on west coast shipping. E A White of a Ta coma smelter warns of potential shutdown within 30 days as water shipments, carrying 80 percent of ore, are cut off.
