Senator Taft blasted Gen. Eisenhower's choice of Martin Durkin, a Democrat, as secretary of labor calling it an incredible appointment and an affront to union members. Washington reaction noted as early signals of debate emerged.
George M. Humphrey urged the incoming administration to maintain good relations with labor and avoid a rift with Sen. Robert A. Taft after Taft criticized Martin P. Durkin as labor secretary. Taft called Durkin an incredible appointment and accused Durkin of partisan stance, arguing the choice omits broad Democratic support, signaling party strains as Eisenhower forms his cabinet.
Four White convicts died and seven were gravely ill after consuming paint thinner cocktails in a Kilby Prison binge. Prison Director J. M. McCullough said a painting detail worker allegedly smuggled the drinks, which contained methyl alcohol, and that Troy Blackstock and Calvin C. Roper were among the dead.
Helena Gov John W Bonner named J H Van derbeck aged 49 of Virginia City to fill the unexpired term of Baxter Larson as chairman of the Montana Industrial Accident Board. Police report arrests of Ray Douglas Freel and William Briggs for the Golden Gate tavern robbery. Briggs had prior time on McNeil Island for a white slavery charge. Chester Lewis was cleared. Rifles and pistols stolen from Tripp Gun and Key shop later recovered. Arraignment set for Wednesday at 10.

Forty one countries opposed, twelve abstained, and two were absent. The outcome signals Western resolve to pursue a peace plan that allows non-forcible repatriation and delays major decisions until after allied reactions.

The federal government raises maximum insurable FHA mortgages under Title IX to ease defense housing delays in Montana. Announced by Ben S. Hill in Helena, the higher limits target defense workers in Butte Silver Bow County Anaconda Deer Lodge County and Great Falls districts. Units promised in Anaconda Great Falls and Butte lag behind, with only partial starts to date.
In Reno a 16 year old Tracy youth Pat Chavez Alvillar was booked on a charge of slaying his 13 year old sweetheart Barbara Hopman during a Russian roulette game in a hotel room. A witness, Carl Wofford, said Alvillar jokingly tested the gun and shot Barbara after asking if she loved him.
A Kiev based military court in the Soviet Republic of Ukraine sentenced three former trade and light industry officials to death by firing squad for being enemies of the people. The men are K. A. Khain former manager of the Kiev trading base of the light industry merchandising organization and D. I. Gerzon and Y. E. Yaroshetsky former heads of base sections.
Butte forms a Crusade for Freedom committee led by Roy E. Murray Jr. with E H Reeder and others as aides. The plan includes a Dec 11 house to house canvass to raise funds for Radio Free Europe to combat Communism.

New York, Joseph D. Nunan Jr., former head of the Internal Revenue Bureau, was indicted on five counts of income tax dodging totaling 91,086 for 1946 to 1950. His aide Daniel A. Bolich was indicted separately for 7,444 in taxes in the same period. Nunan faces up to 25 years and a 25,000 fine if convicted. A House subcommittee probe earlier linked the cases to a broader scandal that toppled several Revenue officials.
Searchers feared snows in the San Bernardino mountains could bury a missing Air Force transport with 13 airmen aboard. The C-47 disappeared Monday night after departing Davis Monthan in Arizona for March Air Force Base, with no trace found 18 hours later as crews faced snow-filled clouds. The plane belonged to the first weather group at Offutt Field and had flown from Tucson to Arizona with a reduced crew before carrying 13 aboard on the final leg.
