Allied reconnaissance planes attacked off Recce New Ireland destroying a 10,000-ton Japanese transport and a large tanker as two destroyers and other vessels were bombed. The transport sank after two direct hits while a tanker was set afire by bombing.
Washington December 2 the War Production Board plans gradual easing of nuisance controls on civilian manufacture due to better supplies of steel copper and aluminum. Lifting restrictions will avoid extra labor and may save manpower by simplifying production. consider removing inferior metal requirements and reintroducing aluminum and copper to civilian uses as stockpiles of aluminum rise and copper stays balanced with war needs.
Cardinal Schuster of Milan condemns the authorized sacking of churches in German-occupied Italy. He denounces imprisonments and executions of hostages and declares that war does not excuse looting or vandalism.
Moscow reported Red army forces smashed northwest of Gomel sweeping up more than 80 villages and killing 1,500 Nazis. Soviet communiques described gains near Znamenka and Dmitrovka, heavy tank and infantry assaults, and risk to Zhobin Kalinковичи rail line as German counterattacks failed.
The county salvage committee asks public and parochial school children to bring waste paper bundles to their schools today. Trucks will collect from the schools as part of ongoing efforts to gather paper for a central depot.

London dispatch reports a Berlin fire raid crowd menaced an English fascist radio figure known as Lord Haw Haw. The warden arrested the broadcaster and a firefighter as mobs struggled to restrain themselves while being taken to a police station.
London reports another RAF raid on Berlin Thursday night with 30 estimated aircraft losses. The attack follows a period without raids since last Friday and comes after Allied daytime raids on the Cherbourg peninsula and Solingen.

The Senate approved a modified Green-Lucas bill 42 to 35 to bar government paid propaganda distribution to overseas servicemen by federal officials. The measure allows government radio broadcasts with equal time for major party representatives.
The submarine Wahoo, 1525 tons with a 65 crew and a presidential citation, is overdue and presumed lost after two patrols claimed 13 to 19 Japanese ships. Also announced is the escort carrier Liscome Bay torpedoed November 24 during Gilbert Islands operations, making it the only U S vessel lost in that campaign.

British based planes of the U S Eighth Army air force set a new monthly high in November by dropping over 7 670 tons of explosives and incendiaries on Germany and occupied Europe and shooting down 257 enemy aircraft. Flying Fortresses and Liberators destroyed 139 German planes, fighters 105, Marauder bombers 10, with losses totaling 93 heavy bombers, six Marauders and 42 fighters.
In Fort Worth Senator Connally says a great conference is taking place in the Middle East among Roosevelt Stalin and Churchill. London dispatches claim the leaders meet in Tabriz Iran to draft an unconditional surrender ultimatum and quarantine Germany.
The forecast shows snow flurries Friday and Friday night with little temperature change. West of the continental divide expects partly cloudy skies with showers and snow flurries, colder Friday night. East of the divide remains partly cloudy with slight cooling Friday night and reduced wind in the west and central areas.
