Butte Fire Dept Demonstrates New Engine No 7

The Butte Fire Dept displayed its $69,000 Engine No 7 on East Park Plaza near Main with a noon demonstration. Mayor Thomas F Powers and ex-mayor Vern Griffith were hoisted from the Medical Arts Building for a brief aerial tour as snow fell. Bud Tate, the firehouse mechanic, operated the aerialscope hoist reaching 75 feet according to Fire Chief Jack McCarthy.

Governor Babcock sells assets of trucking firms to Consolidated Freightways

Governor Tim Babcock announced the sale of most assets of his two Montana trucking firms to Consolidated Freightways for about 1 million dollars. He will keep authority to haul lumber and steel buildings into the Midwest. The sale includes all assets and permits of Babcock & Lee Petroleum Transporters, Inc., and the intrastate and interstate permits of Babcock & Lee Transportation, Inc. Final ICC and Montana Railroad Commission approval is awaited.

Attorney Sylvester J. Sullivan Dies at 60 in Butte

Sylvester J. Sullivan a Butte attorney 60 died Thursday night in a local hospital presumably from a heart attack. Born March 15 1906 in Butte he served in World War II and earned a law degree from the University of Montana. He practiced with Shone and Sullivan in the Prudential Tower for about 15 years and is survived by his widow and several siblings nieces nephews and cousins. Body at Duggan Merrill Mortuary.

Driver in death car posts bond in manslaughter case

George P. Kelly Jr. 24 of 519 W Granite is charged with manslaughter in the death of Dr. Adam J. Smith 61 Montana Tech math head killed at Granite and Idaho. Montanans vote split in spotlight senate race results

About 5,100 of 264,971 ballots cast on November 8 did not vote for either Metcalf or Babcock. Metcalf led with 138,166 votes to 121,697 for Babcock and 2 percent for write-in Gallup. Canvass confirms Metcalf’s 16,469 plurality and other winners.
