Hotel owner Fred Grefig dies at 67 in Butte

Fred A. Grefig, 67, operator of the Leonard Hotel and veteran of World Wars I and II, died Saturday in a local hospital. A Butte native, he served in the U S Marine Corps and was a past commander of the Marine Corps League and a founder of the group. He held roles with American Legion The Forty and Eight Butte Elks Lodge 240 and others.

Martha Evans Dies in Butte After Long Life of Service

Martha Nichols Evans of 1300 W. Steel died Saturday at her home in Butte. Widow of L O Evans, she was born in Chicago and lived in Butte 65 years. A St John Episcopal Church member and former Republican national committeewoman, she is survived by a daughter Elizabeth Stadler, a son Lewis N. Evans, five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Funeral services by Richards Funeral Home with burial at Mount Moriah.

Weather Outlook for Butte and West of Divide

Partly cloudy through Monday with highs around 40 and lows near 16. East of divide expect 40 to 55 for both days with some 35 in the extreme west Sunday. West of divide variable highs 30 to 45 with fog or low clouds in valleys at night and morning.

President Johnson affirmed a vow of frugality in federal spending. He asked top officials for cost cutting reports and plans for the next year while pressing for value for a dollar and prudence in operations. He also signed bills, prepared a budget outline for 1965, and backed a Warren Commission inquiry into Kennedy's assassination.

Highway Deaths Advance to 351 During Holiday

The Associated Press reports 351 people died in traffic accidents during the extended Thanksgiving period with about a day left. The count began Wednesday at 6 p.m. local time and ends at midnight Sunday. The National Safety Council did not estimate beforehand, noting Thanksgiving is a family holiday with limited long travel. The peak toll was 514 in 1962. the low was 442 in 1960.

Vietnamese girl self immolates in protest of war

A 20 year old Vietnamese woman sat in front of the International Control Commission villas in Saigon and burned herself to death to protest Vietnamese fighting Vietnamese. She left a note accusing the country of internal conflict and possible communist backing.

Parade Ushers Santa to Town in Butte 1963 Welcome

Santa Claus arrived in Butte for the 1963 Christmas shopping season with a parade featuring three high school bands the Butte Central and Anaconda Soldiers Memorial Band and the Santa entourage. Thousands lined Main Street as candy was handed out by Santa and his aide Frank Panisko. The afternoon parade was followed by a Hootenanny Day show at the Civic Center with local acts and national guests. The event was organized by Butte retailers and the Chamber of Commerce Merchants Division.

Big Hole to Canyon Ferry irrigation canal planned

Bruce Johnson of the U S Bureau of Reclamation says a two reservoir irrigation system with a 160 mile canal from the Big Hole River near Dillon to Canyon Ferry near Helena could cost 70 to 80 million dollars and irrigate over 60 000 acres. The plan includes Reichele Dam and a second reservoir 60 miles away. Farmers would fund costs through yearly payments once districts and congressional approval are secured.

Churchill Hailed On 89th Birthday In Hyde Park Flourish

Sir Winston Churchill, 89, greeted a cheering crowd outside his Hyde Park home as he appeared in a green smoking jacket with a cigars and brandy cake. He spoke after recent family losses and the Kennedy assassination reignited shared war memories.

Death of Rev. James J. Sheerin, Butte Pastor

The Rev. James J. Sheerin, 72, pastor of St. Mary Catholic Parish in Butte, died Saturday after three weeks in a local hospital and a recent surgery. He served in Helena and several Montana parishes, and was longtime state chaplain of the Daughters of Isabella. Interment will be in St. Patrick Cemetery.
