Fascist air raids over Madrid marked a third strike in 24 hours as ten bombs hit model prison barricades. British MPs received figures showing 1,936 Madrid bombardment victims from November 8 to 29, including 365 killed on the spot. An insurgent assault on Pozuelo de Alarcon was reportedly crushed after fierce fighting.
Dr. Peter Potter, a county taxpayer, demands the board of county commissioners seize tax deeds on parcels totaling 1,351,855 in back taxes. The demand, served yesterday, targets properties including locations in the business district and gives the board until December 11 to act.
Testimony over alleged illegal ballots named John Duggan William Kelly and James Hannifin as witnesses. J J Lynch seeks a recount with Frank L Riley as defendant before Judge Frank P Leiper in Glendive. Supreme Court later denied a writ of prohibition as proceedings continued.
In Paris on November 30 the United States and France reached a preliminary accord to liquidate all war debts with a new payment plan in 20 annuities and to invite Britain into talks. Premier Blum and Foreign Minister Delbos discussed rapidly resuming payments with no counter demands, focusing on US UK France commitments.
An adjourned Butte city council meeting approved an ordinance to redeem the remaining balance of a 1921 10-year bond issue and issue a new 20-year bond totaling 883000. The new bonds dated Jan 1 1937 will bear 3 percent on 275000 and 4 percent on 608000, tapering to four percent on all after five years, with no principal payments in the first five years. The old bonds carry six percent interest semi annually. Beginning Jan 1 1941 payments on the new issue commence.
The State Board of Education will request additional Federal funds for the Montana State University journalism building in Missoula. Bids for construction, heating and plumbing, and electrical work came in about 30 000 dollars above the 180 000 federal allocation, due to rising material costs. bids from J E Hightower Missoula 149 800 for general construction Harris Brothers Minneapolis 22 700 for heating and plumbing and Western Montana Electrical Missoula 6 949 for electrical work. The board will decide at a meeting December 14 whether to award contracts. Excavation is complete.
Chicago reports a record crowd of about 45 000 as judges award top honors across cattle sheep and barley divisions. Epponion the Eighth Rosemere won grand Aberdeen Angus, Tillinois College of Agriculture and Kentucky claimed sheep blue ribbons, and Purdue and Pennsylvania State earned Berkshire titles. Willard Bainbridge of Greensburg Indiana named top 4 H member with a $300 scholarship. Grain hall excitement grows as corn ears near crown competition.
Montana entries win in wether lamb classes with Montana State College taking first in fat Hampshire wethers and the champion wether lamb. Barley and grain prizes go to Abe Carter of Corvallis L E Peterson of Victor Peter Erickson of Corvallis and John C Hauf of Corvallis with multiple regional firsts and placings.
Fresno man Uriah L. Jones, 82, died in Fresno and hours later his widow Mrs. E Alice Jones died in Columbus Ohio from what is believed to be the shock of learning of his death.
London reports the Crystal Palace fire destroying the famed 1851 structure in Hyde Park after a blaze in a cloakroom. Spectators watched as molten glass and explosions sent fire across the vast glass and iron building with evacuations and injuries among firefighters.
John Stanwood Murray 16 youngest son of Senator and Mrs James FE Murray 321 West Broadway died yesterday noon at his home after a brief illness. He was a Christian Brothers high school junior and a football tackle. Murray, a native of the mining city, was widely known and his death brought deep grief to classmates and friends. The senator was traveling in Los Angeles and flew to Butte yesterday.
In Buenos Aires on November 30 President Franklin D. Roosevelt will address the Inter-American Conference for the Consolidation of Peace. The opening session in the National Congress building marks a major gathering of 21 Latin American states. The aim is world peace coordination with hopes resolutions become law via member governments.
A Navy plane crashed into the sea off La Jolla late today. Lieutenant Robert T. Symes was tentatively identified by goggles found aboard the Milwaukee to be the pilot. The radioman aboard the craft was not yet identified.
