State prison librarian fired over inmate contraband charges

Powell County Attorney James J. Masar filed charges against Paul Nelson a former Montana State Prison librarian. Nelson allegedly transported contraband to inmates including a .32 caliber pistol to inmates Gordon Wilkins and Patrick Broderick. Nelson was asked to resign after carrying a letter from a convicted murderer to an unidentified Montana attorney.

Colorado shootout leaves two dead and two in jail

In Agate Colorado two men are jailed on first degree assault charges after a shootout with the Colorado State Patrol that killed Paul Lloyd Denny 18 and Cindy Lou Cline 14 aboard an interstate stop east of town. The suspects James Edward Jelle 20 and James Howard Denend 28 remain in Elbert County jail as investigators review the case.

Ford weighs extending temporary tax cuts into October

President Ford signals he will delay a decision on extending this year's temporary tax cuts, while economists expect a go ahead. An eight billion dollar payroll withholding cut, higher deduction, and tax credits were designed as a temporary stimulus. Rate hearings delayed in Montana Power rate case

The Public Service Commission delayed the Montana Power Co rate hearing from Sept. 8 to Oct. 27, citing missing data required to cross examine. The PSC will still hear the Sept. 8 motion by Consumer Counsel Geoffrey Brazier to dismiss the rate hike request.
