Butte 4-H and FFA Livestock Show crowns champions

The fat beef grand champion is a 935 pound slick Black Angus calf from 18 month old Boyd Iverson of Townsend. Other grand champions include Harvey Howe with a 90 pound Hampshire Suffolk Cross sheep and Kay Cogdill with a 205 pound Berkshire swine. 133 animals from nine counties were judged at the Montana Livestock Auction Co yards with a sale set for Thursday at 1 pm.

Dillon Officer Charged With Assault In Motive Motel Case

Montana patrolman Robert Speer 33 was arraigned on second degree assault in Dillon on a hotel assault case involving Bernice Gleed 33. Bond set at 5000. case under county attorney Carl Davis investigation. Gleed, a former Great Falls schoolteacher, injured in motel cabin attack after an off duty shift.

Defendant Sentenced to 18 Months for Interstate Car Theft

Alvin Neitch, 30, pleaded guilty in U S District Court to interstate transportation of a stolen automobile and received 18 months in federal prison. He is an escapee from an Oklahoma prison where he was serving two five year concurrent burglary terms, escaping June 9. He admitted stealing a station wagon in York, Maine, and driving to Augusta, Montana, where he abandoned it.

Drivers Urged to Heed Highway Patrol Over Labor Day

Helena AP report notes Highway Patrol Supervisor Alex Stephenson promises a stronger enforcement program for the Labor Day weekend. All patrolmen will be on duty with intensified action against hazardous violations to reduce speed and drunk driving, following Gov. Nutter’s proclamation. Lights on patrol cars will remind motorists to slow down from 4 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Butte Industrial Development Corp and Deer Lodge County Economic Betterment Corp Anaconda join to promote construction and operation of a proposed $40,000,000 steel mill at Anaconda. Two Escape State Prison Dawns in Deer Lodge Breakout

State prison authorities and Western Montana officers hunted Wednesday night for two convicts who escaped from the Deer Lodge institution shortly before 2 30 p m. John C Keller 21 of Butte and Larry Cheadle 21 with Billings relatives listed as fugitives. Keller 5 8 blond blue eyed was imprisoned for forgery and parole violated. Cheadle 5 9 150 pounds fair complexioned brown hair hazel eyes. Warden Powell away assistant warden in hills during the manhunt.

Warm Weekend Forecast In Montana Sees Higher Temperatures

Helena AP reports Labor Day weekend will bring sunshine and warm temperatures in Montana with highs generally 80 to 90 degrees. The Weather Bureau notes five day outlooks will run about five degrees above normal with scattered thundershowers possible in the afternoons or evenings.

Daylight Time Ends In Butte On Monday

Butte residents who lost an hour of sleep on May 29 will regain it Monday night as Daylight Saving Time ends. Clocks go back one hour at midnight to Mountain Standard Time, changing 12 to 11. Anaconda Co operations in Butte switch to MST at 7 a.m. Tuesday, marking the shift from 7 a.m. daylight saving to 6 a.m. standard time.

Anaconda Mines and Plants to Close Labor Day

All Anaconda Co. mines and plants in Butte will close Sunday Sept 3 and Labor Day Sept 4. Company operations will switch to Mountain Standard Time at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning as 7 a.m. daylight saving becomes 6 a.m. standard time.

Orientation Day At Butte Junior High

Orientation Day at Butte Junior High School features sessions for seventh graders in the auditorium at 9 30 am. Students will receive rule briefings and locker assignments then take a building tour at 11 30 am. Officials urge early registrations as classes near capacity. Office hours today and Friday are 9 am to noon and 1 pm to 5 pm.

Show of Arms Made on Berlin Border

The U S Army rushed a small armored task force to the East Berlin border after an American sergeant was held up by armed guards inside the sealed off Soviet sector. A captain and three enlisted men crossed into East Berlin and were blocked by East German police cars. The Army dispatched two extra tanks and five armored cars to Friedrichstrasse crossing as foreign traffic enters and leaves the blockaded zone.

Red Lodge Man Killed in Highway Crash

A 26 year old Red Lodge hotel bellhop Judd Patrick Roby died in a motor vehicle crash near Laurel. His car and a northbound truck collided about half a mile south of Laurel on Highway 310 312. The other driver was Adam L. Boehler 30 of Billings. Roby died at the scene and his body was taken to Red Lodge for services. He is survived by his parents a brother and sister. The Montana auto deaths total for the year reached 177.
