Clarksburg West Virginia August 30 Harry F Powers 45 described as a suave resident of the state who turned to mass murder as his livelihood and added another ghastly chapter to the tale of his career after an hour of questioning.
Governor C Ben Ross declared martial law in four Idaho counties to quell arson fires threatening timberlands as National Guard and foresters battle outbreaks. About 60 workers were released to bolster lines across Placerville Grimes pass with 45 miles of line in place. Law could expand to Lemhi Custer and Adams counties if arson persists.
Washington reported the treasury would issue more than one billion dollars in long term bonds and certificates to fund a deficit. Secretary Mellon said about 800 million in 3 percent bonds would run 20 to 24 years and 300 million in 1 percent certificates.

Vatican City August 30. Negotiations to settle the Italo Vatican controversy over Catholic clubs entered an official stage with Cardinal Pacelli meeting Italian ambassador Count Devecchi. Devecchi attended mass at Mussolini camp where Monsignor Bartolomasi officiated, with about 5000 Avanguardist boys in attendance.
