The Wall That Heals honored in Butte ceremony

The Wall That Heals opened in Father Sheehan Park Butte with a sunrise prayer and a 200-person gathering. Marine Sgt. Michael Taapken led the event with remarks and thanks to Gold Star families Vietnam veterans and supporters. Choirs sang The Star Spangled Banner as county officials praised the legacy and sacrifices of Montanans.

Board adopts Smith River outfitter lottery system

Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks board approved a new lottery to reallocate abandoned or revoked Smith River launch days to all licensed commercial outfitters. The rule targets guides and outfitters only and does not affect public permits. Proponents note public comments questioned including only seven existing outfitters, while FWP says the change is unrelated to a pending lawsuit by Mike Geary.

Cubs moved to Helena rehab after capture on campus

Two bear cubs aged six to seven months were captured after hiding in a tree on Montana Tech campus. They and their mother were feeding on garbage on Butte's west side. the adult was euthanized. The cubs are now at Montana WILD Wildlife Center in Helena for potential winter care and rehabilitation.

Californian sentenced for fentanyl trafficking in Montana

In Missoula a 47 year old California man Anthony Wayne Johnson II was sentenced to 20 years in prison and five years supervised release after pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and possessing a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking. He was part of a large conspiracy moving methamphetamine and fentanyl from California to Montana with co conspirators in the Butte and Helena communities. Packages mailed from California to Montana in November 2022 contained about 9000 fentanyl pills before interception.
