Missoula Firefighter Dies From Falling Snag
Charles Russell Hogan aged 19 of Missoula was killed while fighting a forest fire on the Powell district of the Clearwater National Forest. A trained smoke chaser, he died when a falling snag struck him. his body was flown to Missoula by helicopter. His death marks Montana’s fourth firefighting fatality this summer.

Anaconda and Deer Lodge County Considered for ARA Status
Senators Mansfield and Metcalf said inclusion of Anaconda and Deer Lodge County in the Area Redevelopment Administration program is under consideration after Silver Bow County’s project was approved. A 60 day US Bureau of Mines study on the proposed Anaconda steel mill is a prerequisite to a final ARA decision, with other projects including lumber, recreation facilities and tourism development.
