Inside the Montana State Prison reporter Paul M. Quinn reports a shift toward rehabilitation and classification. Guards say security remains vital as National Guard leave. inmates note some demands met while hidden weapons and arson fears persist amid ongoing tensions.
Donald E. Stull, district supervisor, heads a three day Watchtower Circuit convention in Butte with 700 expected attendees. The event at Butte High School opens Friday night and runs through Sunday with Stull overseeing training and analyzing circuit activities. His talk titled Removing the Barriers Dividing Man will be delivered Sunday at 3 p.m. in the auditorium.
The Anaconda Company will close all mines and plants in Butte from Sunday, September 1, through Labor Day, Monday, September 2, affecting operations and worker schedules.
Helena Cherf Brothers Inc and Sandkey Contractors Inc of Ephrata Wash submitted the apparent low joint bid of 947 885 for the remaining 23 miles of canal for the Helena Valley irrigation project Seven bids were opened by the Bureau of Reclamation T E Mann the bureau construction engineer said the bids would go to Denver for higher level approval The project will start Oct 1 and finish in spring 1959 Miles and Williams Construction Co of Helena had the second low bid at 976 724 Phase one covers canal work from the Helena Valley dam with phase two by other bidders
Mrs. Rose Liggett of Whitehall denies harboring Dale Morris, the 33 year old former Montana cowboy and foster son, who escaped Harrison County jail Mississippi in June and was captured in California. She spoke at a friend's home in Whitehall while holding Morris’ son and denying the Aug. 6 harboring accusation. The FBI has charged Peggy Goudelock in Idaho Falls with harboring Morris, with possible trial in Butte or Boise.
The Senate passed a $3,435,810,000 foreign aid measure by a 59-19 vote with little debate and sent it to the House for final action. The bill, tied to civil rights approval, would likely conclude the 85th Congress's first session as adjournment looms. President Eisenhower was reported disappointed but unlikely to veto.
William E. Proxmire was sworn in as the new Democratic senator from Wisconsin succeeding the late Joseph McCarthy. He won a Tuesday special election in a stunning upset and took the oath during a filibuster with Vice President Nixon present.

Sam J. Muller of 124 E Granite, 82, died after a vehicle struck him at Granite and Wyoming Wednesday night. Police said Blanche Gustavsen, 20, drove east then turned north, striking Muller. Muller had lived in Butte 24 years, was a hotel worker retired since 1946, and a Sacred Heart Church member. He is the citys first traffic fatality in almost a year.
Montana adds Ingval J. Thorberg of Medicine Lake to 1957 highway toll after a car left a Montana road near Grenora North Dakota crossed the border and rolled. Officials from both states debated jurisdiction before Montana issued the count. The death lifts Montana's toll to 130.
London reports reflect a 11 point Western disarmament plan rejected by Valerian Zorin of the Soviet Union at the U N Disarmament Subcommittee. Moscow insists on an unconditional ban on atomic tests and broader regional talks amid stalled negotiations.
