Korean Marines greet an American correspondent who arrived with their victory at Tongyong in Korea. The visitor was treated as an honored guest, commanded a warship, and engaged in discussions on strategy and Pearl Buck.
Omar A. Pinson, 32, once among the nation’s 10 most wanted, was captured at the California capital after a chase. He claimed a companion buried him alive during an Oregon prison escape with William Benson, who was later captured. Pinson said he recovered consciousness to find himself buried in Idaho before authorities learned the truth.
The House approved a bill to make shipping slot machines into 47 states a federal crime. It targets one armed bandits and pinball machines, except in Nevada where gambling is legal, aiming to cut $3 billion in annual syndicate revenue. Violators face fines up to $5,000 and two years in prison.
President Truman signed into law a sweeping social security expansion covering about 45 million workers. The plan adds 10 million new covered workers, boosts benefits up to 100 percent, and raises payroll taxes starting 1951. Retirees will receive an average $46 monthly from Oct 1, with substantial increases for future retirees.
A group of 20 Silver Bow County residents must report September 5 to an induction station for pre induction examinations under the 1948 selective service act. Bion Hall says the tests determine fitness for duty and those who pass will have at least 21 days before formal induction. Officials expect September 5 to be the sole call that month.

Wenzel Brown resigned from the board of school district No. 1 at a regular meeting citing personal business pressures. The board will meet Sept. 11, review stadium finances, and discuss possible ticket increases or cost sharing with rising expenses.
Butte Fair weather turns partly cloudy Tuesday afternoon with little temperature change. Tuesday high near 75 to 85 in western Montana with scattered thunderstorms inland. Airport and School of Mines report highs in the 73 to 76 range and lows around 38 to 40 through Monday evening.

Russian diplomat Jacob Malik urged the United Nations Security Council to place the Formosa question on its agenda amid tensions over U S naval activity near Taiwan. Chou En Lai accused the United States of aggression and seeking to keep forces on Formosa, while the U S denied plans for Formosan control and offered UN scrutiny. Malik aimed to have a formal resolution ordering the U S to withdraw from Formosa, facing Western opposition.
United States Army reporting two crack battalions of British troops landed in Korea from a carrier bringing the Argyll and Sutherland and Middlesex regiments from Hong Kong. The Consolation stood nearby as American and Korean officials welcomed the reinforcements with cheers and bagpipes on a sunny pier.

The White House said President Truman personally ordered General MacArthur to retract a Formosa remark that stated the island is vital to U S defenses. The policy remains that the United States has no designs on Formosa and seeks its international settlement. The move exposed civil military policy tensions and sparked Republican criticism on Capitol Hill.
Don Rose a 23 year old from San Bernardino California boarded a Western Airlines flight to Portland by mistake while reporting for Army pre induction physical Monday. He was ordered to report to Los Angeles for the exam and officials arranged for a seat on a south bound flight. Rose recently earned a master’s degree in psychology at the University of California.
New York City may add atom bomb shelters to new schools. Maximilian Moss, president of the board of education, urged at a planning commission hearing that 1951 capital budget plans be pushed. He proposed reinforcing basements to shelter pupils and nearby residents.
