Bodies of Mrs Buick Eicher and her three children found in crude graves near a Clarksburg garage. Police say Harry Powers, 45, runs a matrimonial bureau and faced murder charges. Widow had disappeared from Park Ridge, Illinois after June 22 to July 12.
Prime Minister MacDonald is stripped of leadership of the British Labour Party while his son Malcolm defends the move to form a national emergency government to tackle the financial crisis. Arthur Henderson takes the mantle and will lead a large Labour bloc in the Commons to oppose the new government as Parliament convenes on Sept. 8 to push a $600 million expenditure cut toward a balanced budget. Conservative and Liberal forces back the economy program.

In Tokyo on August 29 Col and Mrs Charles A Lindbergh linger over possible future travels. They may fly to China or Manila per US Ambassador Forbes, though no firm plans are set. Fortified by a county attorney opinion, the question of whether the county will aid Front street taxpayers in paving from Utah to Harrison Avenue will be settled Tuesday afternoon at a meeting of the county surveyor, the board of county commissioners, and the city aldermanic committee. The opinion says the county may not share costs but can fund the entire $18,000 project if deemed worthy, though it cannot spend more than $10,000 on one project without a vote.
Saturday and Sunday in Montana are expected to be fair with warmer conditions in the eastern section. The forecast calls for light winds and mild temperatures across most locales, aiding outdoor plans and travel.
A 75 acre forest fire in Bitter Root National Forest, about 2.5 miles east of Black Bear ranger station, led to a full closure of Skalkaho road yesterday. Heavy timber on both sides of the highway fuels the blaze. A 50 man crew under Joe Holm was dispatched from Missoula to combat the fire, which remained out of control late last night.
Sixteen camps formed for the campaign as the largest fire in the region burned. Victories were reported against Lost Creek and Ant Flat blazes in the Blackfeet forest. Lost Creek flames neared Whitefish city 48 hours earlier. A new blaze arose southeast of Stevensville in Bitter Root forest while a second blaze was quickly checked. A firefighter released from Midget Creek was seen smoking toward Avery, Idaho, prompting officials of the St Joe forest to pursue prosecution.
A body was recovered in Great Falls as the Waldron crew tragedy continued. The remains are the fifth crew member missing from the Waldron incident, furthering the mystery surrounding the disaster and rescue efforts.

Charles M. Rosenthal a 24 year old New York broker whose family was asked for 100000 dollars was released after a ransom of 50000 dollars was paid. He said a woman named Thelma Gross from Philadelphia lured him by phone and after dinner on August 11 he was abducted by three men near the Polo Grounds. He was found at a Bronx police station and reporters were told of the botched swoop and the wallpaper details he recalled.
The Mississippi river at Winona reached a record low level of 138 feet under low water mark. The prior lows were 1.33 feet in 1889 and 1.38 feet in 1864, marking the new extreme for the river.
In Kansas City the outdoor hotel housed in a park faced noise complaints from roomers about a large alarm clock. A board member received a letter from the clock owner denying the clock's size, stating he and the old lady reconciled, with the clock kept quiet and the couple back indoors.
Alex Gatewood, 24, of Butteman, clashed with a waiter after a 25 cent cheese sandwich demand. He paid 15 cents, attacks followed with a salt cellar and a pistol. Gatewood was arrested. pursuer Tom Lin was booked for carrying concealed weapons and released. The case heads to police court today.
In Mandan North Dakota on August 28 a crime spree spanning several states ended with the arrest of two 17 year old girls and two 17 year old boys. Names given include Jack Anderson and George Wallace both 17 from Bismarck and Denver. The suspects from Glen Dive Montana were arrested after a chase near Glen Ulin while attempting to rob a general store. Sheriff Handtmann said the youths admitted numerous robberies including oil stations across Montana North Dakota Nebraska Wyoming and Colorado. They are held in Morton county jail without charge pending further investigation.
Butte restaurant owner George August, a World War veteran, will meet his 16 year old daughter Pauline Marie in Judge Frank L. Riley's court next Friday. The long custody dispute with Bridget Burns, who cared for the girl since 1916, saw a postponement to allow the daughter to attend. August served in the army during World War I and has pursued custody for seven years and a sight of his daughter for five years.
