Former Georgia governor Lester Maddox secured the American Independent Party nomination with 177 votes at the Chicago convention. Dallas columnist Robert Morris received 80 1 3 votes and Louisiana Rep. John R. Rarick 11 12 votes. Maddox attacked the major parties and pledged a hard line on issues including abortion, ERA, gun control, and national health care while promising to veto any national health bill.

Everest Expedition Reaches Base Camp For Summit Bid
The American Bicentennial Everest Expedition has established a base camp on the west bank of the Khumbu glacier at 18 000 feet, 12 members led by Phillip Tremble left Katmandu three weeks ago aiming to reach Everest's summit by late September.
