A massive blaze at Stand ard Oil Co refinery in Whiting Indiana begun by the explosion of a 26 story gasoline cracking tower killed two people and injured 44. About 950 families evacuated as gasoline flooded streets and sewers. Firefighters battled flames from 30 storage tanks and two cracking units as a 3.2 million gallon nat h gas propane tank exploded, forcing a retreat to prevent further blasts. Damage estimates ranged from 10 to 100 million dollars with officials cautioning totals would rise.
