Soviet forces counter attacked northwest of Stalingrad wiping out a Nazi tank wedge and advancing to the outskirts of Rzhev, while other sectors held firm near Mozdok. The communique reports 26 German tanks destroyed along the Rzhev drive and continued pressure on the Volga approaches.
Japanese forces pull back from Chuhsien as Chinese columns advance 25 miles on the Chekiang Kiangsi railway. Chinese troops report burning towns and willful destruction as Japanese rearguards retreat eastward. US air forces target Lashio while Stilwell HQ notes fires and aircraft losses.
The hygienic laboratory of the Montana state health board has tested the blood of 40 140 men drafted for Army duty since November 1940. Tests screen for possible syphilis and various respiratory and parasitic diseases.
Kansas City Kansas motorcycle patrolman Jack Eskridge, who has endured two skull fractures in traffic incidents since joining last September, was given permission by Chief Will Johns on Thursday to obtain a horse for police duties.

Draftees classified as 1-B from Butte boards are sent to Fort Douglas Utah this evening via the 6 40 oclock Union special train. Names include William R Heikkinen Elmer Matson James M Latsch George J Rutledge and Herbert A de Maryland avenue among others.
Washington reporters note Congressional debate over drafting 18 and 19-year-olds this year. Chairman Sabath says Congress may approve lowering the draft age, while Chairman May and others urge restraint unless necessary. The 18-19 group is cited as strong fighting material and current plans target 20-year-olds and dependents.
The Navy announced the destruction of the one year old destroyer Ingraham due to a foggy Atlantic collision. The communique provided few specifics beyond confirming the loss and noting next of kin have been notified.
Washington August 27 The United States failure to control wages and farm prices threatens Canada's inflation program said Donald Gordon chair of the wartime prices and trade board at a press conference with Price Admin Leon Henderson Gordon warned that a price ceiling cannot be effective without a wage ceiling and stressed the mutual concern over policy efficacy.
Helena reports hail storms Monday caused minor damage to grain fields in Blaine Powder River and Garfield counties. E K Bowman chairman of the state hail insurance board noted the finding Thursday.
Butte’s selective service quota for August is completed after examining registrants from local draft board No. 1. Draftees heading to Fort Douglas include John J. Peck and many others with addresses across Butte and nearby states. the list also shows registrants from Helena, Casper, Grass Range, and Port Orchard among others.
The Senate finance committee removed a proposed 5 percent freight excise tax plus a 5 cent per long ton levy on coal from the pending tax bill. Treasury estimated the freight tax would raise $171 million yearly, while a 5 percent pari mutuel wagering tax was approved to bring in about $23.5 million annually. The panel also supported wage and dividend withholding taxes and rejected cutting them out. Price Administrator Leon Henderson urged removal of the freight tax.
Edward E. Bomak reports a new explosion potential in the western desert as Rommel’s Africa corps strengthens, possibly doubling the force that swept Libya and pushed toward Egypt. Churchill values total Axis strength near 90,000 with Germans dominating half.
Soviet raids hit eight eastern German towns and Berliner Treptow while American Flying Fortresses strike Rotterdam and other Ruhr targets. British and American air forces report no losses, continuing sixth major European raid wave with planes returning safely.

General MacArthur's headquarters reports Allied airmen shot down 12 to 14 Japanese fighters at Milne Bay and Buna in New Guinea in a joint land sea operation. Eight enemy fighters were shot down at Milne Bay, four at Buna, with anti-aircraft reports suggesting up to 17 destroyed or damaged. The action follows a costly Allied landing at Milne Bay and ongoing ground engagement.
