Plane crashes off Gloucester. 12 saved as others missing
A Pan American Airways twin motor amphibian crashed in the sea off Gloucester while attempting to avoid fog. Twelve passengers were saved by the fishing schooner Nova Julia and brought to Gloucester. one passenger is missing. The craft, registration MCV1V, was en route from Halifax to Boston. The plane dove into the sea after an attempted descent under a fog bank, leaving survivors clinging to a wing tip as it sank.

Tokyo August 27 Colonel Charles Lindbergh and his wife arrived by sea plane from New York and planned continued vacation air travel. He ordered overhauls at Kasumigaura to hasten the plane’s future flights after a six day tour of receptions. Lindbergh noted oil fouled spark plugs caused motor trouble but said the aircraft was otherwise sound. Plans for China Australia or a world flight remained undetermined.

Four Long Term Prisoners Take Their Own Lives
In Marquette Michigan on August 27 a group of long term inmates at the state prison chose suicide after abortive escape attempts. Three men died by self inflicted gunfire following tear gas and failed escape, with a fourth prison inmate also shooting at guards before ending his own life. Six others were wounded or harmed during the incident, including a guard and two trusted inmates. Names given include Andre Germano Leo Duver and Charles Roseburg, Detroit residents serving prison terms for serious crimes.

Donald Calder, Butte Tailor, Dies at 63
Donald Calder, a long-time Butte resident and tailor, died at his home on West Woolman Street after a month-long illness. He leaves his wife Kate and son Donald Jr. Born in Scotland, he had two sisters and a brother there, plus another brother in Australia, and was active in the Scottish community and the Robert Burns celebration. Former Butte Youth Crushed as Tree Falls in Fire
Spokane, Aug 27. Anton Obermayer, 22, forest service observer, fled a fire menaced Yaak river station in northwestern Montana Tuesday night and was killed by a falling tree. His body was found yesterday as officials noted seven firefighters killed in the Montana Idaho Washington sector this season. Obermayer lived in the Yank section where his parents are pioneer farmers.
