Emil Guay of Butte is tentatively identified as likely the sole casualty of a massive 3,500 pound dynamite blast that damaged much of the city. An inquest is set for Thursday at the coroner's office to determine death as names and evidence are reviewed.
The explosion of two tons of dynamite near Pittsmont Smelter in East Butte Friday night is detailed through a sheriff held press conference. Asst Police Chief Vern Maddock and others describe tip leads, stakeouts, and a plan to catch suspects, with several witnesses injured.
David Fellin and Henry Throne were pulled to the surface from a 300 foot chamber after 14 days trapped underground. Throne surfaced first at 2 07 AM and Fellin at 2 41 AM, both smiling and praising the daring rescue.
The Harrison School near Saturday's East Butte blast was approved to reopen on Monday despite six unusable rooms due to damage. Superintendent Charles Davis told trustees the building is structurally sound after a thorough Monday check, with 117 window panes shattered and over 200 windows damaged citywide.
Three 16 year old escapees from the State Industrial School at Miles City were arrested in Axe Canyon about 10 miles east of Dillon after a nine hour statewide burglary chase. The youths from Deer Lodge Dillon Helena and Kali spell were armed and surrendered at 5:30 p.m. Authorities said the truck stolen from Musselshell county carried a large loot from Beaverhead ranches.

Charles O Rourke a 30 year old Bozeman man died from injuries after his car collided with a eastbound Northern Pacific passenger train at the Fifth Street crossing near U S Highway 1089 in Livingston. He was thrown from the car and the vehicle was dragged about 100 feet along the tracks. Survivors include his parents Mr and Mrs John O Rourke of Livingston. The 1963 Montana traffic toll reached 142.
Harstad Associated Inc of Seattle was hired by the Butte City Council to handle engineering for a Special Improvement District in uptown Butte. The plan funds demolition and rebuilding of pavements and sidewalks on key streets with an estimated $350,600 cost, half funded by the federal Urban Renewal program.
A vacant three story wooden building at Fifth and Elm in Anaconda burned at 1 a.m. Monday. Smoke drew spectators as Anaconda Co. workers activated a call box alarm and firefighters fought the blaze for over two hours. no residents were present.
