The probable death toll from the Aug. 17 Montana earthquake rose to 13 as a Red Cross official reported the Ballard family of Nelson British Columbia and their son Christopher among the missing buried by a rock slide at Rock Creek Campground. Nine bodies had been recovered. Relatives of the Boynton family sought information as searchers found scant traces near the slide.

A pre dawn fire destroyed the 62 year old Maryland Block boarding house at 25 W Quartz. No occupants were inside, about 30 firefighters fought the blaze for four hours.
