Four Killed in Crash Near Helena
A single engine airplane crashed nose first on the Continental Divide about 15 miles northwest of Helena Montana, killing four occupants from Longview Washington. The crash occurred at the 5 000 foot level near Mullan Pass as the aircraft struck timber, exploding about 1 500 feet from the railroad. The victims were Mr and Mrs Jack Richards and Mr and Mrs A G Bud Saunders. Saunders owned a major automobile agency in Longview. The CAA reported the flight was a second attempt to cross the Divide en route to Spokane. The bodies were taken to Hagler Mortuary in Helena and will be moved to Longview Saturday. Sheriff Coroner Dave Middlesmas had the crash area secured for investigation.

Four Brooklyn teenagers aged 15 to 18 were indicted on first degree murder charges for a weeks long spree of beatings that left two men dead. Jerome Lieberman Melvin Mittman Jack Koslow and Robert Trachtenberg face the death penalty if convicted. The Aug. 17 arrest followed a passerby’s sighting of a man being beaten.

Stolen Safe Missing After Butte Tavern Burglary
Police report no new leads in a safe burglary at the Shoetorium in Butte. A tan Chevrolet sedan, license 15 1275, was tracked but the getaway car and the safe, worth about 800 dollars, remain missing. The car was found on Ruby Street near Montana. Andrew W Kidd of Drummond owned it and claimed it was stolen. Sheriff and deputies pursued the suspects but did not recover the safe. The incident occurred around 3 40 a.m. Thursday.
