New German airmen land in New York Harbor on flight across Atlantic
Captain Wolfgang von Gronau and three crew members landed their Dornier flying boat in New York harbor near the Statue of Liberty completing a 47 hour journey from Halifax. The crew called the trip a training flight and said fuel in the Arctic threatened a longer route back to Europe. The total leg covered about 5,000 nautical miles as harbor craft greeted the arrival at 3:47 p.m. local time.

France's Vautour torpedo boat slides into water during launch
In Havre on August 26 the 400 foot torpedo boat Vautour of the French fleet was damaged when the launch ways collapsed. The 2,480 ton vessel slid 200 feet into the water causing several injuries and forcing delays until September tides. The submarine Meduse was launched successfully at about the same time.
