The Graf Zeppelin departed Los Angeles Municipal Airport at 12 14 this morning for Lakehurst New Jersey on the last leg of its round the world flight. Weather was reported fine for the start.
United Press reports heightening Arab Jewish clashes across Tel Aviv Jaffa and surrounding areas with martial law in effect. More than 100 dead, 12 Americans among the injured, as British troops struggle to quell violence. Calls grow for U.S. government intervention through Secretary of State Stimson.
An unidentified 24 year old woman died an hour after a crash on Rowe road when an automobile driven by Joe Adair with N J Newman and another man as passengers left the road and struck a fence near the Milwaukee bridge. The woman was fatally injured by a broken windshield. The two men were jailed.
George K. Morrow, 56, now chairman, and Frederick K. Morrow, 42, president, led the group that bought United Cigar Stores from Whalen interests for over 100 million. Born near Toronto, the brothers built a vast network including American Linseed, Standard Milling, Christie Brown, and Consolidated Bakeries of Canada, with Gold Dust making George a noted figure in American finance.
Representatives from 26 Montana towns gathered in a large meeting of the Rainbow Order. The opening program featured business, entertainment, and a grand ball at the Masonic temple. Today the session resumes with a memorial service, reports from chap ters, a piano solo by Cornelia Clack, and a vocal solo by Phyliss Magruder as Butte members present an exemplification of ceremonies.
United Press report from Mines Field Los Angeles Aug 26 notes the Graf Zeppelin will depart tonight to set a new time record for a world circumnavigation. Commanded by Dr Hugo Eckener the airship aims to beat 23 days, pursuing a shorter route via Lakehurst New Jersey and El Paso.
Carroll Morse 10, son of Hall postmaster F. M. Morse, drowned at Flint creek near Hall after rescuing Carl Nelson Jr. from drowning. Morse and Nelson had been swimming with Wellington Enman. Medical aid from Drummond arrived too late.
Washington Aug. 26. Chairman Smoot said he expects to report the tariff bill to the senate Wednesday with a detailed Republican defense of rates. The plan is for Senate consideration a week later, but delays may come from Democratic analysis. Connally charged Watson fears voters in 1930 and said Republicans may postpone action to December 1930 if Democrats stall.
Government chemists examined alleged faulty ether after four children died on operation tables in Toronto hospitals. Mary Cummins aged 15 was the latest victim, dying within three minutes as a nurse prepared the ether for surgery while she hummed a song.
In Montana near Kalispell the Half Moon Trail Creek and Sullivan Creek fires slowed with calm winds and general showers after midnight. A trench from Tea Kettle mountain to Camp Four and to Cedar Creek aims to guard Columbia Falls from spread toward Coram. Fire presses east toward Glacier National Park while efforts to hold Nyack and protect Hungry Horse ranger station continue.
British Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Snowden told French, Italian, Belgian and Japanese representatives that their new offer on reparations failed to meet Britain's claims. He rejected it after conferring with British experts, noting it amounted to about 57 percent of Britain’s share versus the creditors’ 75 percent target. The fate of further concessions remained doubtful.
The endurance plane Spokane Sun God arrived at Cleveland airport after completing a cross country flight from St. Paul to the national air races. Pilots Nick Mamer and Art Walker landed the craft, handed it to mechanics, and departed as events continued.
Chicago readers learn that ballroom dancers pay little heed to new steps from the nation’s dancing masters. Thomas Birchler, head of the Chicago Association of Dancing Masters, laments as he demonstrates several newly released dances such as the Camel Glide and the Cabin Drag. He notes dancers prefer their own styles despite the efforts of organizers.
The federal Farm Board endorsed the newly organized United Growers of America, a $50,000,000 national cooperative for small fruit and vegetable growers. Led by Julius Barnes, the group proposes a national sales service for growers’ cooperatives and plans outlined to the board.
Viewfield Aug 26 A city fireman rescued a small boy from a blazing barn and unknowingly left his own daughter to die. Joseph L Finnegan rushed into the flames and saved Robert Stone seven but later learned his daughter Helen six who had been playing bonfire in the barn with the boy perished in the blaze.
A C Johnson president of the American National Bank of Helena says stockholders approve joining 37 northwest banks in merger with First Bank Stock Corporation formed in Minneapolis. The Helena bank holds assets exceeding $5,000,000 and will keep current personnel and directors. Montana Trust and Savings and the National Bank of Montana have already joined.
Mrs Maude Hughes and sisters Maybelle Hughes and Mrs F A Woodbury denounce a Sunday report alleging Claude L Hughes died after 40 days of fasting. They say he was deeply religious, not fasting, and did not claim preparations for an end of the world on Sept 26.
