American housewives face rising food costs as staples like porterhouse steak and pork chops climb after a half percent inflation. Families cut back, substitute with hamburgers and garden-fresh produce while sharing tips on cheap meals and vegetable gardening.
The Montana State Prison warden Edward C. Ellsworth was dismissed by the State Board of Institutions for administrative weaknesses. Charles Dell was named acting warden with plans to hire a trained penologist. Ellsworth, 55, had been warden since 1962 after serving as Powell County sheriff.

Police and troops questioned 3690 people in Bohemia and Moravia during last week's demonstrations marking the Soviet invasion anniversary. Nineteen of 78 foreigners nabbed were Americans, all detained in Prague. The Interior Ministry cited most faced antistate activity charges. President Kenneth Kaunda announced negotiations will begin Thursday on nationalizing 51 percent of Zambia's copper mining industry. A $4 million year round resort complex at Gregson Hot Springs in Montana is called feasible by Brelsford and Associates of Bozeman. The project, proposed by Inter-County Development Corp, would create 175 fulltime and 68 seasonal jobs by year three with a $1 million annual payroll and over $2 million in direct construction impact. The EDA will review the report, with final approval requiring local participation.
State institutions employees seek higher pay but the State Board of Institutions says no money beyond a 5 percent annual limit set by the 1969 Legislature. About 700 workers in three unions, including Warm Springs State Hospital, Galen State Hospital, and Boulder River School and Hospital, have not signed contracts. The groups represent roughly 700 employees as talks stall over the 5 percent cap.
A lightning sparked blaze in Glacier National Park raged out of control high on a mountainside above Going to the Sun Road. The fire blackened more than 350 acres as winds drove flames skyward. A crew of 66 Blackfeet Indians and 38 park workers battled the fire, with 22 more Indian firefighters arriving the next day. Public viewing drew hundreds of tourists from Logan Pass.
Authorities said a fire on Going-to-the-Sun Mountain posed no threat to tourists or facilities as winds halted air suppression. Two minor lightning fires flared near Essex along the Middle Fork of the Flathead River, while a Glacier fire haze affected Butte. A large 7000 to 10000 acre blaze burned in eastern Oregon’s Wallowa Whitman forest. no new fires reported in the Deerlodge area after Sunday storms.

He cited antioxidant scavengers and mouse trials showing longevity gains, estimated a $20 million price tag, and said lifespan likely is modifiable.
