A brief report notes Graf Zeppelin is safe in Los Angeles while Jerusalem reports a death toll of 85 with 12 Americans among the dead. The item also mentions Golden Gate, a ship carrying 70 aboard on the longest voyage, and a column titled Everybody's Business about a new bank merger, wealth and culture, and militarism in China.
Vincent Sheean, renowned foreign correspondent, is commissioned by the Alliance to report on Jewish Arab rioting in Jerusalem. He previously infiltrated Rif lines during the Spain and Rif War and reported from China during the 1927 uprising, making him the sole English or American trained correspondent in Palestine.
The Graf Zeppelin was sighted near Los Angeles shortly before 2 am. A later message indicates the airship would land near sunrise, around 5 am, after proceeding at reduced speed into the Los Angeles area. The sighting was reported from Municipal Airport in Los Angeles.
The Chase National Bank and the National Park Bank in New York unite to form the second largest U S bank. Albert H Wiggin aged 61 becomes chairman of the board, having served as executive at both banks. He has led the National Park Bank as vice president and the Chase as president, with directorships at major companies. Reclamation issues to be discussed at governors meeting in Salt Lake City with focus on surface rights and federal aid for western projects.
Special cable dispatch from Jerusalem reports bloody warfare between Jews and Arabs continuing as 12 American students are confirmed dead. A company of South Wales borderers arrives as British troops begin to secure the area. Continued on page 2.
Representative Burns of Tennessee forecast substantial Democratic gains in the next congressional elections, crediting the tariff dispute. He predicted Democrats would win eight to nine Republican seats in Kentucky and increase House membership as farmers and consumers punish supporters of the tariff act.
Fourteen people were injured in a series of Sunday motor accidents near Butte. One hit-and-run driver case was reported in daylight near the business district. James Hart of Salt Lake City, badly hurt, suffered fractured ribs and possible brain injury after his car failed steering on Harrison hill. Helen Ranges, 16, of 105 East Granite, was badly hurt with a fractured pelvis. Continuing details note hospital care and police actions.
Missoula Aug 25 Five thousand forest service workers in northern Idaho and western Montana battle fires across about 200000 acres with 50000 acres in four large blazes. Uncontrolled Kaniksu fires in northern Idaho and dangerous spots near the Flathead River tributaries are noted, while Maggie Creek blaze is controlled. The Graf Zeppelin completes over water journey to San Francisco circling the city before heading to Los Angeles.
Montana Rainbow Order Girls arrive in Butte for the fourth annual convention. About 200 girls from 28 chapters expected to attend with drill and ritual teams performing today and tomorrow. Butte assembly No 4 hosts. Grace Downing delivers welcome, Marjorie Cooley replies. banquet at 5 30 p m.
National Commander Paul McNutt and other American Legion members were hosted by the Italo American association at Salviati palace in Rome. They spent the day sightseeing and many visited Ostia for sea bathing.
Senator John W. Schnitzler, Montana's flying farmer, who runs a vast wheat operation, traveled from Butte to Salt Lake City and then to Lakehurst, N J, to board the Graf Zeppelin bound for Germany. He will ride National Parks Airways to Salt Lake City and then take a transcontinental air mail plane after a Western States Aeronautical board meeting where he represents Montana.
Butte bootleggers neglect customers to frolic at the first annual picnic at a ranch south of Butte. Liquor dealers and variety workers gathered in a social, unpublicized event. Invitations read you are cordially invited to attend the annual bootleggers picnic on Sunday August 25, signed Executive Committee.
Three hundred delegates from Montana Methodist Episcopal churches will attend a conference at Mountain View Methodist Episcopal church starting tomorrow and running through Sunday. Prominent church leaders will participate. Rev. Charles G. Cole organized plans for an elaborate program. Dr. Clarence True Wilson of Chicago, noted anti liquor figure, will speak as part of the lineup.
Eleanor Eldredge aged four died after severe burns suffered when her dress caught fire while she and her brother Joseph aged five played with matches in the rear yard of their South Bend home. The incident occurred about three hours before the report, with Eleanor losing life despite efforts to save her.
Butte residents prepare for the tenth annual flower show sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Garden Club and the Butte Chamber of Commerce. Volunteers are needed to clear and set up the exhibit room at the Chamber offices. Entries must be in by 1 pm tomorrow and actual flowers placed in the exhibit room before Wednesday noon. A slide program of local gardens will run each evening at 9 o'clock during the show.
